Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: THUS SAITH ... THY GOD (THAT) PLEADETH THE CAUSE - (; ; .) THOU SHALT NO MORE DRINK IT AGAIN - (Isaiah 54:7.) This cannot supply to Israel after the return from Babylon, because she has drunk the cup of suffering more bitterly than ever since then; but only to them after their final restoration....

22._Thus saith Jehovah. _Not at random does the Prophet add to the name Jehovah three epithets, namely, that he is the _Lord _or Defender of his Church, that he is _God, _and lastly, that he is her _Avenger. _We ought always to consider what is the nature of our relation to God; for he addresses us in a familiar manner, in consequence of having once chosen us to be his people, by uniting himself to us in an everlasting covenant. 17-23 God calls upon his people to mind the things that belong to their everlasting peace. Jerusalem had provoked God, and was made to taste the bitter fruits. Those who should have been her comforters, were their own tormentors. They have no patience by which to keep possesion of their own souls, nor any confidence in God's promise, by which to keep possession of its comfort. Thou art drunken, not as formerly, with the intoxicating cup of Babylon's idolatries, but with the cup of affliction. Know, then, the cause of God's people may for a time seem as lost, but God will protect it, by convincing the conscience, or confounding the projects, of those that strive against it. I HAVE TAKEN OUT OF THY HAND THE CUP OF TREMBLING - (See the notes at Isaiah 51:17). This verse contains a promise that they would be delivered from the effect of the wrath of God, under which they had been suffering so long. THOU SHALT NO MORE DRINK IT AGAIN - Thou shalt no more be subject to similar trials and calamities (see Isaiah 54:7). Probably the idea here is, not that Jerusalem would never be again destroyed, which would not be true, for it was afterward subjected to severer trials under the Romans; but that the people who should then return - the pious exiles - should be preserved forever after from similar sufferings. ISAIAH 51:17 TO ISAIAH 52:12. THE SORROW OF JERUSALEM, WHICH SHALL GIVE PLACE TO JOY. Isaiah 51:17. The prophet, obviously familiar with the vision of Jeremiah 25:15, pictures Jerusalem as staggering under the stupefaction caused by the draught which Yahweh in His anger has compelled her to drink. Two pairs of evils (expressed in Heb. by word-plays) have befallen her, and who is there to comfort her (read who shall for how shall I with VSS). Isaiah 51:17 to Isaiah 52:12. The Lord will turn the Captivity of Zion The three oracles into which this passage naturally falls are these: (1) Isaiah 51:17. The prophet, returning to the thought with which the book opens (ch. Isaiah 40:2), announces that the period of Jerusalem's degradation has expired. The city is figured as a woman lying prostrate and senseless, intoxicated with the cup of the Lord's indignation which she has drunk to the dregs, her sons unable to help her (17 20). But the cup is now taken from her and passed to the enemies who had oppressed and insulted her (21 23). (2)...
