Verse Isaiah 53:10. _TO GRIEF_ - "With affliction"] For החלי _hecheli_, the verb, the construction of which seems to be hard and inelegant in this place, the _Vulgate_ reads בחלי _bocholi_, in infirmitate, "with infirmity." _WHEN THOU SHALT MAKE HIS SOUL_ - "If his soul shall make"] For תשים _tasim_, a MS. has תשם _tasem_, which may be taken passively, "If his soul shall be made_ - "agreeably to some copies of the_ _Septuagint_, which have δωται. The design of the whole prophecy is to state, that in consequence of his great sufferings, he would be exalted to the highest honor (see the notes at Isaiah 52:13). The sense of this verse is, ‘he was subjected to these sufferings, not on account of any sins of his, but because, under the circumstances of the case, his sufferings would be pleasing to Yahweh.
