Isaiah 59:13

In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. IN TRANSGRESSING AND LYING AGAINST THE LORD, AND DEPARTING AWAY FROM OUR GOD ... The particulars of the sins generally confessed in the preceding verse (; Jeremiah 2:19). The act, the word, and the thought of apostasy are all marked: transgression and departing from God, lying (cf. ) and speaking oppression in relation to our fellow-men, and revolt in relation to our God; conceiving and uttering from the heart....

13._We have done wickedly. _Here he enumerates certain classes of sins, in order to arouse the people more keenly to an acknowledgment of their sin. It must be regarded as monstrous, that men, who have been chastised and almost crushed by the hand of God, are still proud, and so obstinate that they cannot bend or be humbled by a conviction of their sin. The Lord endeavors to soften our obduracy by stripes and wounds; but when chastisements do us no good, our case must be given up as hopeless. Isaiah therefore labors to show how wretched is the condition of the people, who, while they endured severe hardships, yet murmured against God, and did not suffer themselves to be brought into a state of obedience. 9-15 If we shut our eyes against the light of Divine truth, it is just with God to hide from our eyes the things that belong to our peace. The sins of those who profess themselves God's people, are worse than the sins of others. And the sins of a nation bring public judgments, when not restrained by public justice. Men may murmur under calamities, but nothing will truly profit while they reject Christ and his gospel....

IN TRANSGRESSING - That is, we have been guilty of this as a continuous act. AND LYING AGAINST THE LORD - We have proved false to Yahweh. Though we have been professedly his people, yet we have been secretly attached to idols, and have in our hearts been devoted to the service of false gods. AND DEPARTING AWAY FROM OUR GOD - By the worship of idols, and by the violation of his law. SPEAKING OPPRESSION AND REVOLT - Forming plans to see how we might best take advantage of the poor and the defenseless, and to mature our plans of revolt against God. ISAIAH 59:9_ a_. THE PEOPLE CONFESS THAT THEIR PITEOUS PLIGHT IS THE FRUIT OF THEIR WRONGDOING. The poet now joins himself to his people and, speaking in their name, owns the truth of the indictment in Isaiah 59:1. True! that is why we do not attain our right, and victory is not ours! No gleam of hope lightens our darkness. We grope like blind men along a wall instead of treading firmly. We stumble in broad daylight. We moan and murmur like growling bears or cooing doves. The sins referred to in Isaiah 59:12 are enumerated in a series of infinitives (cf. Isaiah 59:4), which should be construed as in apposition to the terms "sin," "iniquities," &c. employed in the general confession of Isaiah 59:12. REBELLION AND DENIAL OF JEHOVAH, AND TURNING BACK FROM AFTER OUR GOD, etc. It is doubtful if there is any reference here to the sin of idolatry; the charge of apostasy is perhaps rather to be understood of offences against social morality, which amounted to a renunciation of the authority of Jehovah.
