9._Associate yourselves. _The verb רעו, (_rognu_,) whether it be derived from רוע (_ruang_) or from רעה, (_ragnah_,) signifies _to bruise_. But as רעה (_ragnah_) signifies _to associate_, some prefer taking it in this sense, which certainly agrees better with the scope and argument of the Prophet. Some render it, _Bruise ye_, that is, _bruise _the kingdom of Judah, or, _bruise _the Assyrians; but this appears to be unnatural or far-fetched. Verse Isaiah 8:9. _ASSOCIATE YOURSELVES_ - "Know ye this"] God by his prophet plainly declares to the confederate adversaries of Judah, and bids them regard and attend to his declaration, that all their efforts shall be in vain. The present reading, _rou_, is subject to many difficulties; I follow that of the _Septuagint_, דעו deu, γνωτε Archbishop _Secker_ approves this reading. דעו _deu, know ye this_, is parallel and synonymous to האזינו _haazinu, give ear to it_, in the next line. The _Septuagint_ have likewise very well paraphrased the conclusion of this verse: "_When ye have strengthened_ _yourselves, ye shall be broken; and though ye again strengthen_ _yourselves, again shall ye be broken_;" taking חתו _chottu_ as meaning the same with נשברו, _ye shall be broken_....

ASSOCIATE YOURSELVES - In the previous verses the prophet had seen the Assyrian coming up on the land like an overwhelming flood. He looked upon the danger, and his mind was turned to the pledge of safety which God had given. The name Immanuel, and the promise connected with the giving of that name Isaiah 7:16, reminded him of the perfect safety of the nation, for it was a pledge that God was with them; see Isaiah 8:10. In view of this pledge of the protection of God, this verse is a spirited apostrophe to the mighty host that was about to invade the land. Though confederated and vast, yet they could not prevail. Even in its literal import, it was not calculated to cheer and encourage more than a few, since neither the maiden nor the child was pointed out with any distinctness.
