Jeremiah 30:24

Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. (Jeremiah 23:19). Vengeance upon God's foes always accompanies manifestations of His grace to His people. A CONTINUING, [ guwr (H1481)] - literally, taking up its abode, dwelling (Psalms 5:4), "a whirlwind" abiding constantly; appropriately here, in the case of Babylon, which was to be permanently destroyed, substituted for 'whirling itself about' ("grievous" in the English version) (Jeremiah 23:19, see notes there), where the temporary downfall of Judea...

He confirms the last sentence, and compares the wrath or the vengeance of God to a messenger or a minister, who is sent to carry a message, or to perform what has been commanded him. Of God’s word, that is, of his threatenings as well as of his promises, Isaiah speaks thus, “My word shall not return to me void.” (Isaiah 55:11) The meaning is, that whatever God promises or threatens, is never without its effect. But they wrongly understand the passage who say that the word of God returns not void, because it brings forth fruit; for he speaks of the effect of the word, whether for salvation or for perdition. So now also God declares that his vengeance, when gone forth, shall not return until it fulfils what has been commanded. 18-24 We have here further intimations of the favour of God for them after the days of their calamity have expired. The proper work and office of Christ, as Mediator, is to draw near unto God, for us, as the High Priest of our profession. His own undertaking, in compliance with his Father's will, and in compassion to fallen man, engaged him. Jesus Christ was, in all this, truly wonderful. They shall be taken again into covenant with the Lord, according to the covenant made with their fathers. "I will be your God:" it is his good-will to us, which is the summary of that part of the covenant. The wrath of God against the wicked is very terrible, like a whirlwind. The purposes of his wrath, as well as the purposes of his love, will all be fulfilled. God will comfort all that turn to him; but those who approach him must have their hearts engaged to do it with reverence, devotion, and faith....

Verse Jeremiah 30:24. _IN THE LATTER DAYS YE SHALL CONSIDER IT._] By the _latter days_ the Gospel dispensation is generally meant; and that restoration which is the principal topic in this and the succeeding chapter refers to this time. Had the Jews properly _considered_ this subject, they would long ere this have been brought into the liberty of the Gospel, and saved from the maledictions under which they now groan. Why do not the Jews read their own prophets more conscientiously?...

Compare the marginal reference. These verses would more appropriately be attached to the next chapter, for which they form a suitable introduction....

EXPOSITION This and the three next chapters form a kind of book in themselves, which contrasts admirably with Jermiah 27-29. In the latter Jeremiah aimed at casting down the delusive hope that the time of trial would soon be over and the captives restored; here he assumes that all are aware of the sad reality, and concentrates himself on the happier topics of comfort and encouragement. Jeremiah 30:1; Jeremiah 31:1. shine out among all Jeremiah's prophecies; there is a combination of softness and vigour which, even from a purely literary point of view, is most attractive. Strictly speaking, they ought to form but one chapter; they represent (as verse 4 states) the revelation from Jehovah "concerning Israel and concerning Judah." Jeremiah 30:12. _For thus saith the LORD, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous._ See here is the bass again. We have got down into the sorrowful notes all to make us sick of self and ready to receive the grace of God. Jeremiah 30:13. _There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines. All thy lovers have forgotten thee:_ Out of sight, out of mind. De Wette, Hitzig, and other rationalists, claim to have discovered that this chapter, and those which follow, are the work of the spurious “second Isaiah.” The critics, with their present day echoes in different colleges, reject these Chapter s as not being Jeremianic.
