Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever. JONADAB ... SHALL NOT WANT A MAN TO STAND BEFORE ME - there shall always be left representatives of the clan to worship me (Jeremiah 15:1; Jeremiah 15:19); or "before me" means simple existence, for all things in existence are in God's sight (Psalms 89:33). So then God now, in order to excite and rouse the Jews, promises to bless the Rechabites, because they had been obedient to their father, _There shall not be cut off a man from Jonadab, _that is, from the offspring of Jonadab, _standing _(literally) _before my face; _but as the conciseness of the verse renders it obscure and ambiguous, I have introduced an addition, — but that _he may stand before my face _And he says that they would stand before his face, not that they were to be priests or Levites, as some of the Rabbins have said, who have applied this passage to the priesthood, because it is often said in Scripture both of the Levites and the priests, that they stood before the face of God. 12-19 The trial of the Rechabites' constancy was for a sign; it made the disobedience of the Jews to God the more marked. The Rechabites were obedient to one who was but a man like themselves, and Jonadab never did for his seed what God has done for his people. Mercy is promised to the Rechabites. We are not told respecting the performance of this promise; but doubtless it was performed, and travellers say the Rechabites may be found a separate people to this day. Let us follow the counsels of our pious forefathers, and we shall find good in so doing....

Verse Jeremiah 35:19. _THUS SAITH THE LORD - JONADAB - SHALL NOT WANT A MAN TO_ _STAND BEFORE ME FOR EVER._] His name shall ever be honourable, and his posterity shall enjoy my continual protection, and there shall never be found a time in which men of his spirit shall be wanting as patterns of genuine simplicity, filial obedience, purity of manners, and deadness to the world. True Christians may be considered as the genuine _successors_ of these ancient _Rechabites_; and some suppose that the _Essenes_, in our Lord's time, were literally their _descendants_, and that these were they who followed our Lord particularly, and became the _first converts_ to the Gospel. Travelers bear witness to the existence of a large tribe who represent themselves as the descendants of the Rechabites. The prediction was also literally fulfilled in the Rechabites being in some way incorporated into the tribe of Levi, whose office especially it was to “stand before” Yahweh Deuteronomy 10:8....

EXPOSITION The third member of this group of short prophecies. In it, Jeremiah points to the faithful obedience of the Rechabites, as putting to shame the infidelity of Judahites. It belongs obviously to the time before the arrival of Nebuchadnezzar, perhaps to the summer of B.C. 606. JEREMIAH 35. A LESSON IN OBEDIENCE FROM THE RECHABITES. These were the descendants of that Jonadab who, in 842, aided Jehu to overthrow the house of Ahab and the cult of Baal of Tyre (2 Kings 10:15 *); they were connected with the Kenites (1 Chronicles 2:55), from whom the worship of Yahweh may have passed to Israel (_cf._ Judges 1:16). The Jews are condemned for their unfaithfulness to God; but the Rechabites are commended for their fidelity to the pledge made by all their house to keep the command of Jonadab. Though mighty enemies were crushing the land under the iron heel of invasion, and it would soon be depopulated, they are assured that their society shall not cease and that Jonadab shall never want. man to stand before the Lord. It is somewhat uncertain just what this remarkable prediction means.
