Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much. JEWS ... He says that _all the Jews; _he puts in the particle גם, _gam, _for the sake of emphasis, _and even all the Jews, _who had fled either to the Moabites or to the children of Ammon, or to the Idumeans, or to other parts in other countries. There is no doubt but they made up a considerable number. Then the whole land must have had many inhabitants; and though it was not populous, yet the desolation that might have been feared, was not extreme. We hence conclude, that there was no over-statement made, when Gedaliah promised security to the leaders of the forces and their companions. _gathered wine … very much_ This was done in the 6th month (Aug. Sept.), only two months (cp. Jeremiah 39:2) after the capture of the city. The Program of Gedaliah Jeremiah 40:7-12 TRANSLATION (7) When all the army officers and their men who were in the field heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land and had committed to him those men, women, and children of the poor of the land who had not been deported to Babylon, (8) they came unto Gedaliah to MizpahIshmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite. GEDALIAH AS GOVERNOR (586 B.C.) Jeremiah 40:7 to Jeremiah 43:6 are briefly summarised in 2 Kings 25:22. The account in the book of Kings mentions merely the accomplished results; while here the process by which these results were brought about are fully detailed. We learn here in particular that Ishmael benNethaniah was prompted to assassinate Gedaliah by the Ammonite king, Baalis, and that Gedaliah was warned of the plot by Johanan, but that he refused to believe that Ishmael would do such a thing. Full details of the slaughter of the people at Mizpah are also given here, as well as an account of the pursuit of Ishmael by Johanan and the recovery of the captives.
