Jeremiah 48:34

From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate. FROM THE CRY OF HESHBON EVEN UNTO ELEALEH. Those who fly from Heshbon, on its capture, shall continue the cry even as far as Elealeh, etc. There will be continued cries in all quarters, from one end to the other, everywhere slaughter and wasting. AS AN HEIFER OF THREE YEARS OLD. Moab heretofore not having known foreign yoke, and in its full strength, is compared to an heifer of three years old, never yet yoked, nor as yet worn out with many birth-givings (cf. note, ). THE WATERS ... OF NIMRIM - i:e., the well-watered and therefore luxuriant pastures of Nimrim....

He continues the same subject; and by many and various expressions confirms the same thing, in order that the faithful might know that the destruction of the Moabites was really foretold, and that they might feel more assured that God announced nothing but what he would presently execute. _At the cry of Heshbon _even to Elealeh they shall _send forth their voice. _He means, as before, that there would be continued cryings and howlings sounding forth from every part, and spreading through every region. He then adds, _From Zoar to Horonaim _We must bear in mind the situations of these cities; but we may suppose that the Prophet chose those cities which were opposite to each other. Then from one corner to the other continual crying would be heard, because there would be everywhere desolation and ruin. And then he comes to another part, from one city even to another there would be a similar...

14-47. The destruction of Moab is further prophesied, to awaken them by national repentance and reformation to prevent the trouble, or by a personal repentance and reformation to prepare for it. In reading this long roll of threatenings, and mediating on the terror, it will be of more use to us to keep in view the power of God's anger and the terror of his judgments, and to have our hearts possessed with a holy awe of God and of his wrath, than to search into all the figures and expressions here used. Yet it is not perpetual destruction. The chapter ends with a promise of their return out of captivity in the latter days. Even with Moabites God will not contend for ever, nor be always wroth. The Jews refer it to the days of the Messiah; then the captives of the Gentiles, under the yoke of sin and Satan, shall be brought back by Divine grace, which shall make them free indeed....

Verse Jeremiah 48:34. AS _A HEIFER OF THREE YEARS OLD_] Which runs lowing from place to place in search of her calf, which is lost or taken from her....

The meaning is that, taking up the lamentation of Heshbon, the Moabites break forth into a wail, heard as far as Elealeh, scarcely two miles distant Numbers 32:37, but thence spreading over the land to towns on the southern and southwestern borders of the land. AN HEIFER OF THREE YEARS OLD - Applied in Isaiah 15:5 to Zoar, but here to Horonaim. Some take “an heifer” as a proper name, and render it: “Eglah for the third part” (compare Isaiah 19:24). Moab's pride is without foundation, doomed to a fall which the prophet laments; comparing the past glory with the far-reaching tendrils of a choice vine (Jeremiah 48:32). There is no longer the joy of the ingathering; the shout of battle replaces that of the vintage (Jeremiah 48:33).
