EVERY DAY A PORTION - rather, 'its portion,' margin (cf. margin, , 'the thing of a day in his (its) day' - i:e., 'at all times, as the matter shall require'). Remarks: (1) When God is angry, and purposes to punish nations and individuals, he gives them over, or at least those on whom their well-being depends, to a judicial blindness as to their own interests, just as he gave over Zedekiah to the suicidal infatuation of rebelling against the great King of Babylon. Verse Jeremiah 52:34. _AND - THERE WAS A CONTINUAL DIET GIVEN HIM_] This was probably a ration allowed by the king for the support of Jehoiachin's household. For other particulars, 2 Kings 25:30. _ALL THE DAYS OF HIS LIFE._] I believe these words have been by mistake added from the preceding verse. There, they are proper; _here_, they are tautological. They are wanting in the _Septuagint_ and in the _Arabic_. The preceding words, עד יום מותו _ad yom motho_, "to the day of his death," are wanting in two of _De Rossi's_ and one of _Kennicott's_ MSS. _Coverdale_ ends thus: _All the days of his life untill he died_. EXPOSITION The contents of this chapter prove that it is not an independent narrative, but the concluding part of a history of the kings of Judah. It agrees almost word for word with 2 Kings 24:18-12, from which we are justified in inferring that it is taken from the historical work which the editor of the Books of Kings closely followed. It is most improbable that Jeremiah was the author. Would the prophet have contented himself with the meagre statement that Zedekiah "did that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord" (verse 2), or with such a summary description of the siege of Jerusalem? CHAPTER S 50-51 BABYLON These two final Chapter s contain a great prophecy concerning Babylon, her overthrow and doom. The fifty-first chapter closes with the statement “thus far are the words of Jeremiah.” There is a direct statement that Jeremiah wrote all these words. We find it at the close of Jeremiah 51:59. “Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.” It would be a brazen infidelity which says Jeremiah did not write all these words.
