Jeremiah 6:14

They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. HURT - the spiritual wound. SLIGHTLY - as if it were but a slight wound; or, in a slight manner, pronouncing all sound where there is no soundness. SAYING - namely, the prophets and priests (). Whereas they ought to warn the people of impending judgments and the need of repentance, they say there is nothing to fear. PEACE - including soundness. All is sound in the nation's moral state, so all will be peace as to its political state (; ; ;...

This is to be applied to the prophets and priests alone; they not only corrupted the people by their bad example, but also shook off every fear of God, and by their impostures and false boasting took away every regard and respect for the teaching of the true prophets. He then says, that they _healed to no purpose, _or with levity or slightness, (175) _the wound of the people _He says, by way of concession, that they had healed the wounds of the people: but it was no cure, when the evil was increasing. They were like the unskillful, who by rashly applying false remedies, cause inflammation, even when the disease is not serious; or like those who are only bent on easing pain, and cause the increase of the disease within, which is the more dangerous as it is more hidden. This is not to heal, but to kill. But the Prophet, as I have said, concedes to them the work of healing, and then states...

9-17 When the Lord arises to take vengeance, no sinners of any age or rank, or of either sex escape. They were set upon the world, and wholly carried away by the love of it. If we judge of this sin by God's word, we find multitudes in every station and rank given up to it. Those are to be reckoned our worst and most dangerous enemies, who flatter us in a sinful way. Oh that men would be wise for their souls! Ask for the old paths; the way of godliness and righteousness has always been the way God has owned and blessed. Ask for the old paths set forth by the written word of God. When you have found the good way, go on in it, you will find abundant recompence at your journey's end. But if men will not obey the voice of God and flee to his appointed Refuge, it will plainly appear at the day of judgment, that they are ruined because they reject God's word....

Verse Jeremiah 6:14. _THEY HAVE HEALED ALSO THE HURT_ OF THE DAUGHTER _OF MY_ _PEOPLE SLIGHTLY_] _Of the daughter_ is not in the text, and is here improperly added: it is, however, in some MSS. _PEACE, PEACE_] Ye shall have _prosperity_ - when there was none, and when God had determined that there should be none. Here the _prophets prophesied falsely_; and the people continued in sin, being deceived by the priests and the prophets....

HEALED - Rather, “tried to heal.” OF THE DAUGHTER - These words are omitted by a majority of manuscripts, but found in most of the versions. SLIGHTLY - literally, “according to,” i. e., as if it were, a “trifle: making nothing” of it. This cry of “peace” was doubtless based upon Josiah’s reforms....

The political rank of Jerusalem, as the capital of the kingdom of Judah, makes it difficult to realize that Jerusalem was not locally a city of Judah at all. It belonged, strictly speaking, to the tribe of Benjamin, a tribe whose insignificance, in comparison with Judah, seems to have led to the adoption of a form of expression not literally accurate (see Psa 128:1-6 :68). That is, the false prophets and lying priests, who pretended to be physicians, and to heal the sickly and distempered state of the people; and they did do it, in their way, but not thoroughly; they did not search the wound to the bottom; they drew a skin over it, and made a scar of it, and called it a cure; they made light of the hurt or wound; they healed it, MAKING NOTHING OF IT; or "despising it", as the Septuagint: or they healed it "with reproach", as the Vulgate Latin version; in such a manner, as that it was both a reproach to them, and to the people: or, as the Targum, "they healed the breach of the congregation of my people with their lying words;'' which are as follow: SAYING, PEACE, PEACE; WHEN THERE IS NO PEACE; promising them all prosperity, plenty of good things, and a continuance in their own lan...

CHAPTER 6 _ 1. The call to the children of Benjamin (Jeremiah 6:1) _ 2. Corruption and the deserved judgment (Jeremiah 6:9) 3. The prophet addressed (Jeremiah 6:27) Jeremiah 6:1. The children of Benjamin are exhorted to flee for safety on account of the evil from the north. There were probably among the Benjamites God-fearing men. Those who heeded the call fled and escaped. It is a warning message which follows: “Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, let my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee desolate, a land not inhabited.” But they heeded it not....

THE JUSTIFICATION OF YAHWEH'S WRATH. The turn of Judah, the remnant of Israel, is now come, and Yahweh bids the foe, figured as a grape-gatherer at work on the vine (see on Jeremiah 2:21) to do his work thoroughly (Jeremiah 6:9 _mg.)._ The prophet complains that the ears of the people are closed to his word, yet he cannot hold it back (Jeremiah 20:9), and will pour it out (so LXX) even on the playing children and the irresponsible youth. Calamity falls on all alike, for all seek gain, and the very leaders are false with their easy talk of prosperity (Jeremiah 6:15; both _mgg.)._...
