Jeremiah 8:21

For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. I AM BLACK - sad in visage with grief (, "All faces shall gather blackness")....

As the hardness of the people was so great, that the threatenings we have observed did not touch them, the Prophet now ascribes to himself what he had _before _attributed to them. _We _then see how the Prophet varies his mode of speaking; but it was necessary, for he was at a loss to find a way to address them sufficiently strong to penetrate into their stony and even iron hearts. We need not wonder, then, that there are so many figurative terms used by the Prophet; for it was needful to set _before _them God’s judgment in various ways, that the people might be awakened out of their torpid state. He then says, that he was _bruised for the bruising _of his people. He was no doubt ridiculed by most of them: “_Oh! _thou grievest for thine own evils; it is well and prosperous with us: who has asked thee for this pity? Think not, then, that thou canst gain any favor with us, for we are conten...

14-22 At length they begin to see the hand of God lifted up. And when God appears against us, every thing that is against us appears formidable. As salvation only can be found in the Lord, so the present moment should be seized. Is there no medicine proper for a sick and dying kingdom? Is there no skilful, faithful hand to apply the medicine? FOR THE HURT OF THE DAUGHTER OF MY PEOPLE AM. HURT. A favorite symbol of. city in the prophets is. woman. The spiritual Babylon appears as. harlot; the New Jerusalem as the Bride of the Lamb; and Jerusalem is often described as "the daughter of my people." Here under this figure Jeremiah describes the carnage that shall desolate Jerusalem and his own suffering on account of her sufferings. He could see in his vision the near approach of the calamities that would ruin his country and he felt the hurt as his own. The reader must remember that Jeremiah was not predicting the distant future but events only separated by. few years....
