_FOR THE CONGREGATION OF HYPOCRITES SHALL BE DESOLATE, AND FIRE SHALL CONSUME THE TABERNACLES OF BRIBERY._ Rather, The banding together of the hypocrites (wicked) shall be fruitless (Umbreit). Maurer translates, 'the family of the wicked shall be barren' - i:e., without offspring. I prefer this. Verse Job 15:34. _THE CONGREGATION OF HYPOCRITES_] 11. Job is here classed with _hypocrites_, or rather the _impious_ of all kinds. The _congregation_, or _adath, society_, of such, shall be _desolate_, or a _barren rock_, גלמוד galmud. FOR THE CONGREGATION OF HYPOCRITES - The word rendered “congregation” here (עדה _‛__êdâh_) means properly an appointed meeting; a meeting convened by appointment or at stated times (from ידה _yâdâh_), and hence, an assembly of any kind. It is commonly applied to an assembly for public worship; but it may refer to a more private company - a family, or circle of friends, dependents, etc. It refers here, I suppose, to such a community that a man can get around him in his own dwelling - his family, servants, dependents, etc. The word rendered “hypocrites” (חנף _chânêph_) is in the singular number, and should be so rendered here. It does not mean that a worshipping assembly composed of hypocrites would be desolate - which may be true - but that the community which a man who is a hypocrite can gather around him shall be swept away. EXPOSITION The second colloquy between Job and his friends is, like the first (ch. 3-14.), one in which all of them take part, and the same order of speakers is maintained. Job answers each speaker in turn; Eliphaz at some length (Job 16:1; Job 17:1.), the other two more briefly. The present chapter contains the second speech of Eliphaz.
