Verse Job 39:21. _HE PAWETH IN THE VALLEY_] רעם _yachperu_, "_they dig_ in the valley," i.e., in his violent galloping, in every pitch of his body, he scoops up sods out of the earth. _Virgil_ has seized this idea also, in his _cavat tellurem_; "he scoops out the ground." See before....

HE PAWETH IN THE VALLEY - Margin, “or, His feet dig.” The marginal reading is more in accordance with the Hebrew. The reference is to the well known fact of the “pawing” of the horse with his feet, as if he would dig up the ground. The same idea occurs in Virgil, as quoted above: _caavatque_ _Tellurem, et solido graviter solar ungula cornu_. The habits and instincts of the wild goat, the wild ass, and wild cattle are first noticed (Job 38:1); then a transition is made to the most remarkable of birds, the ostrich (Job 38:13). Next, the horse is described, and, as it were, depicted, in a passage of extraordinary fire and brilliancy (Job 38:19-18). The great Creator, who accommodated himself to those to whom he vouchsafed to speak, has put into the mouths of his prophets such sublime sentiments and exalted language as must abash the pride and wit of man.
