_HIDE THEM IN THE DUST TOGETHER; AND BIND THEIR FACES IN SECRET._ (Isaiah 2:10.) Abase and remove them out of the sight of men. BIND ... FACES - i:e., shut up their persons (Maurer). But it refers rather to the custom of binding a cloth over the faces of persons about to be executed (Job 9:24; Esther 7:8). IN SECRET - consign them to darkness. Umbreit translates, 'Veil their face in concealment' or 'darkness....

6-14 Those who profit by what they have heard from God, shall hear more from him. And those who are truly convinced of sin, yet need to be more thoroughly convinced and more humbled. No doubt God, and he only, has power to humble and bring down proud men; he has wisdom to know when and how to do it, and it is not for us to teach him how to govern the world. Our own hands cannot save us by recommending us to God's grace, much less rescuing us from his justice; and therefore into his hand we must commit ourselves. The renewal of a believer proceeds in the same way of conviction, humbling, and watchfulness against remaining sin, as his first conversion. When convinced of many evils in our conduct, we still need convincing of many more....

Verse Job 40:13. _HIDE THEM IN THE DUST TOGETHER_] Blend the high and the low, the rich and the poor, in one common ruin. Show them that thou art supreme, and canst do whatsoever thou pleasest. _BIND THEIR FACES IN SECRET._] This seems to refer to the custom of preserving _mummies_: the whole body is wrapped round with strong swathings of linen or cotton cloth. Not only the limbs, but the very _head, face_, and all, are rolled round with strong filleting, so that not _one feature_ can be seen, not even the protuberance of the nose. On the outside of these involutions a human face is ordinarily _painted_; but as to the _real face_ itself, it is emphatically _bound in secret_, for those rollers are never intended to be removed....

HIDE THEM IN THE DUST TOGETHER; - compare Isaiah 2:10. The meaning seems to be, that God had power to prostrate the wicked in the dust of the earth, and he calls upon Job to show his power by doing the same thing. AND BIND THEIR FACES IN SECRET - The word “faces” here is probably used (like the Greek πρίσωπα _prisōpa_ to denote “persons.” The phrase” to bind them,” is expressive of having them under control or subjection; and the phrase “in secret” may refer to some secret or safe place - as a dungeon or prison. The meaning of the whole is, that God had power to restrain and control the haughty and the wicked, and he appeals to Job to do the same....

EXPOSITION JOB 40:1 Between the first and the second part of the Divine discourse, at the end of which Job wholly humbles himself (Job 42:1), is interposed a short appeal on the part of tile Almighty, and a short reply on Job's part, which, however, is insufficient. God calls upon Job to make good his charges (verses 1, 2). Job declines, acknowledges himself to be of no account, and promises silence and submission for the future (verses 3-5). Either in the dust of death, that they may be seen no more in this world, in the same place and circumstances where they showed their pride and haughtiness; or in the dust of the grave, and let them have an inglorious burial, like that of malefactors thrown into some common pit together; as, when multitudes are slain in battle, a large pit is dug, and the bodies are cast in together without any order or decency; or it may be rendered "alike" b, let them be treated equally alike, no preference given to one above another; [AND] BIND THEIR FACES IN SECRET; alluding, as it is thought, to malefactors when condemned and about to be executed, whose faces are then covered, as Haman's was, Esther 7:8; or to the dead when buried, whose faces are bound with napkins, as Lazarus's was,...

DIVINE IRONY. The passage opens with a challenge to Job (Job 40:2) in which God drives home the lesson of the previous speech. Job 40:1 is wanting in LXX and is a gloss. Job 40:3 contains Job's reply, in which he humbles himself before God. Peake and Strahan, however, both think that these verses are properly to be taken immediately before Job 42:1; so that there is only one reply from Job. If Job had already humbled himself, there seems no need of a second Divine speech. If, however, Job 40:3 are part of Job's one and only reply then...

Job 40:6 to Job 42:6. The Lord's Second Answer to Job out of the Storm Shall Man charge God with unrighteousness in His Rule of the World? All that the first speech of the Lord touched upon was the presumption of a mortal man desiring to contend with the Almighty. The display from Creation of that which God is had the desired effect on Job's mind: he is abased, and will no more contend with the Almighty. But Job had not only presumed to contend with God, he had charged Him with unrighteousness in His rule of the world and in His treatment of himself.
