_AND THOU SHALT KNOW THAT THY TABERNACLE SHALL BE IN PEACE; AND THOU SHALT VISIT THY HABITATION, AND SHALT NOT SIN._ Know - as a matter of blessed experience. 'Thou shalt rest in the assurance that thine habitation is (not as the English version, shall be) the abode of peace; and (if) thou numberest thine herd, thine expectations prove not fallacious' (Umbreit). Sin does not agree with the context. The Hebrew word, to miss a mark, said of slingers or archers (Judges 20:16). The Hebrew for "habitation" primarily means the fold for cattle; and for, "visit," often to take an account of, 'to number." Whenever you survey your flock you will find none missing. 'Peace' is the common Eastern salutation; including inward and outward prosperity....

17-27 Eliphaz gives to Job a word of caution and exhortation: Despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. Call it a chastening, which comes from the Father's love, and is for the child's good; and notice it as a messenger from Heaven. Eliphaz also encourages Job to submit to his condition. A good man is happy though he be afflicted, for he has not lost his enjoyment of God, nor his title to heaven; nay, he is happy because he is afflicted. Correction mortifies his corruptions, weans his heart from the world, draws him nearer to God, brings him to his Bible, brings him to his knees. Verse Job 5:24. _THOU SHALT KNOW_] Thou shalt be so fully satisfied of the friendly disposition of all thy neighbours, that thou shalt rest secure in thy bed, and not be afraid of any danger, though sleeping in thy _tent_ in the _field_; and when thou returnest from thy country excursions, thou shalt find that thy _habitation_ has been preserved in peace and prosperity, and that thou hast _made no_ _mistake_ in thy trust, in thy confidence, or in thy confederates. The word אהלך _oholecha_, "thy tabernacle," means simply a _tent_, or _moveable dwelling_, composed of _poles, pins_, and _cloth_, or _skin_, to be pitched any where in a few moments, and struck again with the same ease. The word נוך _navecha_, which we properly translate thy _habitation_, signifies a solid, permanent dwelling-place

AND THOU SHALT KNOW THAT THY TABERNACLE SHALL BE IN PEACE - Thy tent - אהלך _'âh__e__lēkāh_ - showing that it was common then to dwell in tents. The sense is, that when he was away from home he would have confidence that his dwelling was secure, and his family safe. This would be an assurance producing no small degree of consolation in a country abounding in wild beasts and robbers. Such is the nature of the blessing which Eliphaz says the man would have who put his confidence in God, and committed his cause to him. To a certain extent this was, and is, undoubtedly true. A man cannot indeed have miraculous assurance when from home, that his wife and children are still alive, and in health; nor can he be certain that his dwelling is not wrapped in flames, or that it has been preserved from the intrusion of evil-minded men. EXPOSITION JOB 5:1 Eliphaz, having narrated his vision, and rehearsed the words which the spirit spoke in his ear, continues in his own person, first (Job 5:1) covertly reproaching Job, and then (verses 8-27) seeking to comfort him by the suggestion that, if he will place himself unreservedly in the hands of God, it is still possible that God may relent, remove his chastening hand, deliver him from his troubles, and even give him back all his former prosperity. The anticipation is in remarkable accordance with the ultimate event (Job 42:10), and shows that Eliphaz, if not a prophet in the higher sense, is at least a sagacious interpreter of God's ways with men, and can very happily forecast the future.

Eliphaz advises Job to accept the Divine discipline so that God may again show Himself gracious. As for me, instead of being impatient like a fool, I would seek unto God (_cf._ Job 1:21; Job 2:10). Eliphaz, in Job's place, would seek unto God, all whose ways are marked by one purpose, to do good, and whose chastisements, therefore, but open the way to a richer blessing The passage attaches itself to the picture of man's evil nature just given, and suggests where man should find refuge from himself, even in God. Eliphaz in Job's place would seek unto God for help God who is so great in power, and wonderful in His ways (Job 5:8). His ways are not only surpassingly wonderful, but one purpose of goodness runs through them, for even the thirsty wilderness where no man dwells He satisfies with rain, and sets the humble on high (Job 5:10). So on the other hand He disappoints the devices of the crafty and delivers the poor from their hand, and the end is reached towards which all His working tends: the poor hath hope, and evil, a
