Job 9:3

_IF HE WILL CONTEND WITH HIM, HE CANNOT ANSWER HIM ONE OF A THOUSAND._ If he (God) will contend, with him - literally, 'deign to enter into judgment:' 'If it were His good, pleasure х_ YACHPOTS_ (H2654)] to enter into judgment with him' - i:e., to argue with man as to the rights of the question at issue between Him and man. HE CANNOT ANSWER. He (man) could not and would not dare to answer in defense of his cause to ONE OF THE THOUSAND questions of God, from awe of his Majesty. How, then, can man maintain his justice before God? (cf. Job 9:15). This was what, in fact, took place in the end: God asked many questions of Job, to not one of which Job could give an answer, (Job 38:1, etc.)...

1-13 In this answer Job declared that he did not doubt the justice of God, when he denied himself to be a hypocrite; for how should man be just with God? Before him he pleaded guilty of sins more than could be counted; and if God should contend with him in judgment, he could not justify one out of a thousand, of all the thoughts, words, and actions of his life; therefore he deserved worse than all his present sufferings. When Job mentions the wisdom and power of God, he forgets his complaints. We are unfit to judge of God's proceedings, because we know not what he does, or what he designs. God acts with power which no creature can resist. Those who think they have strength enough to help others, will not be able to help themselves against it....

Verse Job 9:3. _IF HE WILL CONTEND WITH HIM_] God is so holy, and his law so strict, that if he will enter into judgment with his creatures, the most upright of them cannot be justified in his sight. _ONE OF A THOUSAND._] Of a thousand offences of which he may be accused he cannot vindicate himself even in _one_. How little that any man does, even in the way of righteousness, truth, and mercy, can stand the penetrating eye of a just and holy God, when all _motives, feelings_, and _objects_, come to be scrutinized in his sight, on this ground, no man living can be justified. O, how necessary to fallen, weak, miserable, imperfect and sinful man, is the doctrine of justification by faith, and sanctification through the Divine Spirit, by the sacrificial death and mediation of the Lord Jesus Christ!...

IF HE WILL CONTEND WITH HIM - That is, if God enters into a controversy with man. If he chooses to charge crime on him, and to hold him responsible for his deeds. The language here is taken from courts of justice, and means that if a trial were instituted, where God should submit charges, and the matter were left to adjudication, man could not answer the charges against him; compare the notes at Isaiah 41:1. HE CANNOT ANSWER HIM ONE OF A THOUSAND - For one of a thousand of the sins charged on him. The word “thousand” here is used to denote the largest number, or all. A man who could not answer for one charge brought against him out of a thousand, must be held to be guilty; and the expression here is equivalent to saying that he could not answer him at all. JOB 9:1 is Job's answer to the position taken up by Bildad, viz. that the Almighty cannot judge falsely (Job 8:3). In Job 2 accepts the general principle that God judges according to merit. But of what use is this? Man has no chance of asserting his righteousness before God, of putting in his claim to reward. There is no equality between the Judge and the person judged. If man wishes to maintain an argument with God (Job 9:3 _mg._) God can ask him a thousand questions that will baffle him. God is all-wise and almighty: who can withstand Him? (Job 9:4). "To contend" is a legal term meaning to enter a plea with, the idea of a court or judge being in the mind of the speaker. Here man is supposed to have a plea with God on the question of his innocency, or on any question involving his righteousness. The question in Job 9:4, "Who hath hardened himself against Him?" makes it probable that man is here considered the appellant. Others take the subject to be God: _if He were pleased to contend with him_(man), cf. Job 9:14_; Job 9:16_.
