There is no umpire to whose authoritative decision both God and I are equally amenable; an arbitrator, the imposition of whose hand expresses power to adjudicate between the persons. As still in the East, it is the practice for two disputants to refer to a passing stranger, and tell him to lay his hand upon both parties, so as to arbitrate or mediate between them. There might be one on a level with Job, the one party; but Job knew of none on a level with the Almighty, the other party - "If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him; but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him?" ...

Verse Job 9:33. _NEITHER IS THERE ANY DAY'S-MAN_] בינינו מוכיח _beyneynu_ _mochiach_, a _reprover, arguer_, or _umpire between us_. DAY'S-MAN, in our law, means an arbitrator, or umpire between party and party; as it were bestowing a _day_, or certain time on a _certain day_, to decree, judge, or decide a matter.-_Minshieu_. DAY is used in law for the _day of appearance in court_, either originally or upon assignation, for hearing a matter for trial. - _Idem_. Why such a man is called a daysman I do not know. The Hebrew word rendered “daysman” מוכיח _môkı̂yach_ is from יכח _yâkach_, not used in the Qal, to be before, in front of; and then to appear, to be clear, or manifest; and in the Hiphil, to cause to be manifest, to argue, prove, convince; and then to argue down, to confute, reprove; see the word used in Job 6:25 : “What doth your arguing reprove?” It then means to make a cause clear, to judge, determine, decide, as an arbiter, umpire, judge, Isaiah 11:3;...

EXPOSITION JOB 9:1 Job, in answer to Bildad, admits the truth of his arguments, but declines to attempt the justification which can alone entitle him to accept the favourable side of Bildad's alternative. Man cannot absolutely justify himself before God. It is in vain to attempt to do so. The contest is too unequal. On the one side perfect wisdom and absolute strength (verse 4); on the other, weakness, imperfection, ignorance. guilt (verses 17-20). Job again takes up his complaint, but in a quieter tone, so that he is able to imagine after all a way in which he might maintain his cause before God. He complains first of the shortness of his life. His time runs swiftly as a runner, as the light papyrus boats used on the Nile, as an eagle in its flight (Job 9:25 f.). If he should resolve to brighten up and treat his misery as a bad dream, what use? God will again put him on the rack. (We may associate Job's quieter moods with temporary relief from paroxysms of pain, which he knows full well, however, to be only temporary). All purifications are useless (Job 9:30 f.). God and he cannot come together on equal terms. If only there were an umpire between them, who could lay his hand upon both disputants, and enforce his decision upon them ...

NEITHER IS THERE. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac, read "Oh that there were". ANY DAYSMAN. any umpire, arbiter, or mediator. In Job's case He was found in Elihu; in ours, in Christ....

The preceding verses described how unavailing all Job's efforts were to make out his innocence in the face of the fixed resolution of God to hold him guilty. Now Job comes back to what is the real difficulty, God is not a man like himself....
