If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; IF HE CALLED THEM GODS UNTO WHOM THE WORD OF GOD CAME, AND THE SCRIPTURE CANNOT BE BROKEN;...

35._To whom the word of God was addressed. _For Christ means that they were authorized by an undoubted command of God. Hence we infer that empires did not spring up at random, nor by the mistakes of men, but that they were appointed by the will of God, because he wishes that political order should exist among men, and that we should be governed by usages and laws. For this reason Paul says, that all who resist the power are rebels against God, because there is no power but what is ordained by God, (Romans 13:1.) It will, perhaps, be objected, that other callings also are from God, and are approved by him, and yet that we do not, on that account, call farmers, or cowherds, or cobblers, _gods _I reply, this is not a general declaration, that all who have been called by God to any particular way of living are called...

31-38 Christ's works of power and mercy proclaim him to be over all, God blessed for evermore, that all may know and believe He is in the Father, and the Father in Him. Verse 35. _UNTO WHOM THE WORD OF GOD CAME_] Bishop Pearce thinks that "the word λογος, here, is put for λογος κρισεως, _the word_ or _matter of judgment_, as in 2 Chronicles 19:6, where Jehoshaphat, setting up judges in the land of Judah, says: _Take heed what ye do: judge_ _not for men, but for the Lord, who is with you in judgment _- λογοι της κρισεως, _in the words_ or _matters of judgment_, - SEPT., which is nearly according to the Hebrew to בדבר משפט _bedebar mishpat_, in the word or matter of judgment. In Deuteronomy 1:17, when a charge is given to the judges that they should not be _afraid of the face of_ _man_, this reason is given: _for the judgment is God's_. The quotation is from Ps. 82, which contains. reproof of unjust judges: "I have said that ye are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High, but ye shall die like men and fall like one of the princes." The argument of Christ is: If in your law judges are called gods, and allowed to have, in some sense, the divine characteristics, and are called children of God, why should you pronounce me guilty of blasphemy for saying that. am the Son of God?
