John 10:9

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. I AM THE DOOR: BY ME IF ANY MAN ENTER IN - whether shepherd or sheep, HE SHALL BE SAVED - the great object of the pastoral office, as of all the divine arrangements toward mankind. AND SHALL GO IN AND OUT AND FIND PASTURE. He "shall go in," as to a place of safety and repose; and he "shall go out," as to green pastures and still waters" (), for nourishment and refreshing; and all this only transferred to another clime, and enjoyed in another manner, at the close of this earthly scene ()....

9._If any man enter by me. _The highest consolation of believers is, that when they have once embraced Christ, they learn that they are out of danger; for Christ promises to them salvation and happiness. He afterwards divides it into two parts. _He shall go in and out, and find pasture. _First, they shall go safely wherever they find necessary; and, next, they shall be fed to the full. By _going in and out_, Scripture often denotes all the actions of the life, as we say in French, _aller et venir_, (_to go and come_,) (287) which means, _to dwell _These words, therefore, present to us a twofold advantage of the Gospel, that our souls shall find pasture in it, which otherwise become faint and famished, and are fed with nothing but wind; and, next, because he will faithfully protect and guard us against the attacks of wolves and robbers....

6-9 Many who hear the word of Christ, do not understand it, because they will not. But we shall find one scripture expounding another, and the blessed Spirit making known the blessed Jesus. Christ is the Door. And what greater security has the church of God than that the Lord Jesus is between it and all its enemies? He is a door open for passage and communication. Here are plain directions how to come into the fold; we must come in by Jesus Christ as the Door. By faith in him as the great Mediator between God and man. Also, we have precious promises to those that observe this direction. Christ has all that care of his church, and every believer, which a good shepherd has of his flock; and he expects the church, and every believer, to wait on him, and to keep in his pasture....

Verse John 10:9. _I AM THE DOOR: BY ME IF ANY MAN ENTER_, c.] Those who come for salvation to God, through Christ, _shall_ obtain it: _he_ _shall be saved_-he shall have his sins blotted out, his soul purified, and himself preserved unto eternal life. This the scribes and Pharisees could neither promise nor impart. _GO IN AND OUT_] This phrase, in the style of the Hebrews, points out all the actions of a man's life, and the liberty he has of acting, or not acting. EXPOSITION JOHN 10:1 5. _Christ the Shepherd of the flock of God_._ _The discourse which now follows was the Lord's parabolic or allegoric reply to the conduct of the Pharisaic malignants. These men, claiming to be infallible guides of the ignorant, to be veritable shepherds of the flock of God, had ignored the advent of the true and good Shepherd, had opposed the Divine call and supreme claim of the Messiah, had set themselves to disturb and dislocate the relations between him and those who saw his glory and found in him the Consolation of Israel.
