John 15:1

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. By a figure familiar to Jewish ears (Isaiah 5:1; ; etc.) Jesus here beautifully sets forth the spiritual Oneness of Himself and His people, and His relation to them as the Source of all their spiritual life and fruitfulness. I AM THE TRUE VINE - of which the natural vine is no more than a shadow. AND MY FATHER IS THE FARMER - the great Proprietor of the Vineyard, the Lord of the spiritual Kingdom....

1._I am the true Vine. _The general meaning of this comparison is, that we are, by nature, barren and dry, except in so far as we have been engrafted into Christ, and draw from him a power which is new, and which does not proceed from ourselves. I have followed other commentators in rendering ἄμπελος by _vitis_, (_a vine_,) and κλήματα by _palmites_, (_branches_.) Now, _vitis _(_a vine_) strictly denotes the plant itself, and not a field planted with _vines_, which the Latin writers call _vinea_, (_a vineyard_;) although it is sometimes taken for _vinea _a vineyard; as, for example, when Cicero mentions in the same breath,_pauperum agellos et _vlticulas, _the small fields and _small vineyards _of the poor Palmites _(_branches_) are what may be called the _arms _of the tree, which it sends out above th

The union of the human and Divine natures, and the fulness of the Spirit that is in him, resemble the root of the vine made fruitful by the moisture from a rich soil. Believers are branches of this Vine. The root is unseen, and our life is hid with Christ; the root bears the tree, diffuses sap to it, and in Christ are all supports and supplies. I AM THE TRUE VINE - Some have supposed that this discourse was delivered in the room where the Lord’s Supper was instituted, and that, as they had made use of wine, Jesus took occasion from that to say that he was the true vine, and to intimate that his blood was the real wine that was to give strength to the soul. EXPOSITION JOHN 15:1 (7) _The parable of the vine and its branches_._ Incorporation of the disciples into one personality with himself_._ _The image of the vine may have been suggested by some visible object. Either of the hypotheses of place would furnish a reminder of the nature and culture of the vine. Thus around the windows of the guest-chamber the vine may have thrown its tendrils, or on the slopes of Olivet the vineyards may have been prominent objects, or the burning heaps of vine-prunings may have suggested the idea.
