And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. AND IN THAT DAY (WHEN HE SHOULD RETURN TO THEM BY RESURRECTION, BUT BE IN GLORY), YE SHALL ASK (OR 'INQUIRE OF') ME NOTHING - `ye shall not, as ye do now, bring all your inquiries to Me in Person, as one beside you.' VERILY, VERILY, I SAY UNTO YOU, WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK THE FATHER IN MY NAME, HE WILL GIVE IT YOU. See the notes at John 14:13; . 23._And in that day you will ask me nothing. _After having promised to the disciples that they would derive_joy _from their unshaken firmness and courage, he now speaks of another grace of the Spirit which would be given to them, that they would receive so great light of understanding as would raise them on high to heavenly mysteries. They were at that time so slow that the slightest difficulty of any kind made them hesitate; for as children who are learning the alphabet cannot read a single verse without pausing frequently, so almost every word of Christ gave them some sort of offense, and this hindered their progress. But soon afterwards, having been enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they no longer had any thing to prevent them from becoming familiarly acquainted with the wisdom of God, so as to move amidst the mysteries of God without stumbling. 23-27 Asking of the Father shows a sense of spiritual wants, and a desire of spiritual blessings, with conviction that they are to be had from God only. Asking in Christ's name, is acknowledging our unworthiness to receive any favours from God, and shows full dependence upon Christ as the Lord our Righteousness. Our Lord had hitherto spoken in short and weighty sentences, or in parables, the import of which the disciples did not fully understand, but after his resurrection he intended plainly to teach them such things as related to the Father and the way to him, through his intercession. And the frequency with which our Lord enforces offering up petitions in his name, shows that the great end of the mediation of Christ is to impress us with a deep sense of our sinfulness, and of the merit and power of his death, whereby we have access to God. Verse 23. _YE SHALL ASK ME NOTHING._] Ye shall then be led, by that Spirit which guides into all truth, to consider _me_ in the character of _Mediator_ in the kingdom of God, and to address your prayers to the Father _in my name _- in the name of _Jesus_ the _Saviour_, because I have died to _redeem_ you - in the name of Christ the _Anointer_, because I have ascended to send down the gift of the _Holy Ghost_....

IN THAT DAY - After my resurrection and ascension. YE SHALL ASK ME NOTHING - The word rendered “ask” here may have two significations, one to ask by way of inquiry, the other to ask for assistance. Perhaps there is reference here to both these senses. While he was with them they had been accustomed to depend on him for the supply of their wants, and in a great degree to propose their trials to him, expecting his aid. See Matthew 8:25; John 11:3. They were also dependent on his personal instructions to explain to them the mysteries of his religion, and to remove their perplexities on the subject of his doctrines.
