10-18 God is able to multiply men's punishments according to the numbers of their sins and idols. But there is hope when sinners cry to the Lord for help, and lament their ungodliness as well as their more open transgressions. It is necessary, in true repentance, that there be a full conviction that those things cannot help us which we have set in competition with God. THE ZIDONIANS - An allusion to the time of Barak, when the Zidonians doubtless formed part of the great confederacy of Canaanites under Jabin king of Hazor. See Joshua 11:8. THE AMALEKITES - In the time of Gideon (marginal reference). THE MAONITES - Probably one of the tribes of the “children of the East,” who came with the Midianites and Amalekites in the time of Gideon, and may have been conspicuous for their hostility to Israel, and for the greatness of their discomfiture, though the record has not been preserved. The name is “Mehununs” in 2 Chronicles 26:7....

The reference to the Philistines seems to be out of place, unless the section is meant to serve as an introduction to Samson's as well as Jephthah's exploits. Judges 10:8. Text faulty: eighteen years should probably stand at the end of Judges 10:7, and Judges 10:8 should perhaps read and they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that were beyond Jordan, the rest being a gloss....

MAONITES. Compare 2 Chronicles 26:7; 2 Chronicles 26:8. A mixture of Moabites and Ammonites. the two words combined....

_The Zidonians … Amalekites … Maonites_ The generalizing list of oppressors is continued. The Zidonians, i.e. Phoenicians (Judges 3:3 _n._), do not appear elsewhere in this character; perhaps the name was suggested by Judges 10:6. The Amalekites are mentioned as allies of Moab in Judges 3:13, and of Midian in Judges 6:3 (see note); cf. Exodus 17:8-16 E. The Maonites (_Maon_is the form here) probably = the Meunim, 1 Chronicles 4:41;...

AND THE MAONITES— It is very uncertain who these _Maonites_ were. Houbigant, with the Vulgate, reads _Canaanites._ The LXX, according to the Alexandrian manuscript and Roman edition, read _Midianites._...
