THEREFORE THEY COMMANDED THE CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN,.... The two hundred men of the tribe that wanted wives; they ordered them as follows, and which they spake with authority, being the elders of the congregation, Judges 21:16 SAYING, GO AND LIE IN WAIT IN THE VINEYARDS; which might belong to Shiloh, or it may be to Lebonah, which perhaps is the same with Bethlaban, famous for its wine with the Misnic writers; who say g the second places for wine are Bethrimah and Bethlaban; and I suspect that Bethrimah is the same with Bethrimmon, near which was the rock Rimmon these men were in; now this being the time of year when the vintage was just over, the vines were full of branches and leaves, under which the men might the better hide themselves; and the grapes being gathered, there were no men in the vineyards, and so might lie in wait safely, and under cover. g Misn.

THE MIGRATIONS OF THE DANITES, AND THE FEUD BETWEEN BENJAMIN AND THE OTHER TRIBES (JUDGES 17-21) This concluding section is really an appendix. Instead of describing a further deliverance, it recounts two tribal stories m which the rough manners and primitive religious ideas of the time are shown with most valuable and vivid detail. Redundancies and discrepancies in the narratives (see on Judges 17:3; Judges 18:17) as well as differences in the language, suggest that more than one account has been used in each of the stories. This is no sign, however, that they are not historical; and they must probably be placed earlier rather than later in the general framework of the period. THEY COMMANDED. — Rather, _they gave notice._ This is the _keri_ or marginal reading of the Hebrew; the _kethib,_ or written text, has the verb in the singular, in which case we must take it impersonally, “It was bidden,” and suppose that some leading personage — probably Phinehas, the impress of whose character and reminiscences is observable throughout — is the speaker....

Judges 20:1; Judges 21:1 FROM JUSTICE TO WILD REVENGE Judges 19:1; Judges 20:1; Judges 21:1 THESE last Chapter s describe a general and vehement outburst of moral indignation throughout Israel, recorded for various reasons. A vile thing is done in one of the towns of Benjamin and the fact is published in all the tribes. The doers of it are defended by their clan and fearful punishment is wrought upon them, not without suffering to the entire people. Like the incidents narrated in the Chapter s immediately preceding, these must have occurred
