12-30 When Israel sins again, God raises up a new oppressor. The Israelites did ill, and the Moabites did worse; yet because God punishes the sins of his own people in this world, Israel is weakened, and Moab strengthened against them. If lesser troubles do not do the work, God will send greater. When Israel prays again, God raises up Ehud. As a judge, or minister of Divine justice, Ehud put to death Eglon, the king of Moab, and thus executed the judgments of God upon him as an enemy to God and Israel. Verse Judges 3:30. _THE LAND HAD REST FOURSCORE YEARS._] This is usually reckoned from the deliverance under Othniel, that being a _term_ from which they dated every transaction, as in other cases they dated from the _exodus_, from the _building of Solomon's temple_, c., and as other nations did from particular events: the ROMANS, from the _building of the city_ the MOHAMMEDANS, from the _Hijreh_, or _flight of Mohammed_ to Medina; the CHRISTIANS, from the _birth of_ _Christ_, c., c. THE LAND - i. e. that portion of it which had suffered from the oppression of Moab, probably Benjamin and Ephraim chiefly (see Judges 3:11). In judging of the nature of Ehud’s act there are many considerations which must greatly modify our judgment. EHUD, THE BENJAMITE. D's setting of the story of Ehud is apparent in Judges 3:12_ a_ and Judges 3:30. The story itself is a genuine folk-tale, handed down from century to century before being committed to writing. One can readily imagine with what zest it was told in the tribe of Benjamin, where the left-handed Ehud was a popular hero. On the moral question raised by his conduct, the facts at our disposal do not enable us to pronounce with confidence.
