Judges 4:1

_AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL AGAIN DID EVIL IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD, WHEN EHUD WAS DEAD._ When Ehud was dead. The removal of this zealous judge left his infatuated countrymen again without the restraint of religion; because while the southern tribes were enjoying unmolested peace and rest during a protracted period of 80 years (Judges 3:30), the northern districts of the country were grievously oppressed by the residue of the old Canaanites, whom the Israelites had with culpable indifference and sloth permitted to retain their settlements....

CHAPTER IV _The Israelites again rebel against God, and they are delivered_ _into the hands of Jabin, king of Canaan_, 1, 2. _They cry unto God, and he raises up Deborah and Barak to deliver_ _then_, 3-10. _Some account of Heber the Kenite_, 11. _Barak attacks Sisera, captain of Jabin's army, at the river_ _Kishon, and gives him a total overthrow_, 12-16. _Sisera leaves his chariot, and flies away on foot; enters the_ _tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, by whom he is slain, while_ _secreting himself in her apartment_, 17-24....

The exact site of _Hazor_ has not been identified with certainty, but it is conjectured by Robinson, with great probability, to have stood on the Tell now called _Khuraibeh_, overlooking the waters of Merom (now called Lake Huleh), where are remains of a sepulchre, Cyclopean walls, and other buildings. The record of this deliverance appears first in a prose and then in a poetical form, of which the latter is the older, written without doubt under the inspiration of the actual events. There are some striking differences between the two versions. In the prose narrative the oppressor of Israel is Jabin, king of Hazor, whose captain is Sisera; Deborah's home is in Mount Ephraim; only the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali fight the tyrant; and Jael murders Sisera when he lies asleep in her tent.
