_AND DEBORAH SAID UNTO BARAK, UP; FOR THIS IS THE DAY IN WHICH THE LORD HATH DELIVERED SISERA INTO THINE HAND: IS NOT THE LORD GONE OUT BEFORE THEE? SO BARAK WENT DOWN FROM MOUNT TABOR, AND TEN THOUSAND MEN AFTER HIM._ Deborah said unto Barak, Up: for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand. From the commanding position the Israelites had taken up, she must have seen the hostile cavalcade advancing across the plain, and finally encamping at Taanach, on a long spur of the mount. The plain on the bank of the Kishon was chosen as the battlefield by Sisera himself, who was unconsciously drawn there for the ruin of his army. 10-16. Siser's confidence was chiefly in his chariots. But if we have ground to hope that God goes before us, we may go on with courage and cheerfulness. Be not dismayed at the difficulties thou meetest with in resisting Satan, in serving God, or suffering for him; for is not the Lord gone before thee? Follow him then fully. Barak went down, though upon the plain the iron chariots would have advantage against him: he quitted the mountain in dependence on the Divine power; for in the Lord alone is the salvation of his people, Jeremiah 3:23. When God goes before us in our spiritual conflicts, we must bestir ourselves; and when, by his grace, he gives us some success against the enemies of our souls, we must improve it by watchfulness and resolution....

Verse Judges 4:14. _UP; FOR THIS_ IS _THE DAY_] This is exactly the purpose for which the _Septuagint_ state, Judges 4:8, that Barak wished Deborah to accompany him. "I know not," says he, "THE DAY in which God will send his angel to give me prosperity: come thou with we that thou mayest direct me in this respect." She went, and told him the _precise time_ in which he was to make the attack: _Up, for_ _THIS is the DAY in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine_ _hand_. _WENT DOWN FROM MOUNT TABOR_] He had probably encamped his men on and near the _summit_ of this mount. THE BATTLE OF THE KISHON AND THE DEATH OF SISERA. The Galilean highlanders rushed like a torrent down the slope of Mt. Tabor, and swept the enemy before them. When Sisera left his chariot and fled on foot (Judges 4:15), he made westward for Harosheth.
