'So very variable are the appearances which this disease produces on the head affected by it, that it has received no less than 20 different names. It is most commonly known under the scientific names of porrigo, herpes, alopecia (baldness), tinea, and popularly as scald head and ringworm. Some forms of it attack children almost exclusively, and are found only among the poor, where there is not sufficient attention to cleanliness; while others occur at all ages, and in all ranks and conditions of society. 29_If a man or woman. _What is here spoken of is not the baldness which so often occurs in old age; but that loss of hair, which is the consequence of leprosy, is distinguished from any other, the cause of which may be some indisposition, and which yet does not pollute a man. But, inasmuch as some kinds of baldness do not so greatly differ at first sight from leprosy, — such, for instance, as _ophiasis _and _alopecia _(8) — it is therefore necessary to distinguish them. EXPOSITION UNCLEANNESS DERIVED FROM LEPROSY OR CONTACT WITH LEPERS AND LEPROUS THINGS (Leviticus 13:1, Leviticus 14:1). A third cause of uncleanness is found in a third class of offensive or repulsive objects. There is no disease which produces so foul an appearance in the human form as leprosy. There was, therefore, no disease so suitable for creating ceremonial, because representing spiritual, uncleanness. GENERAL PROCEDURE. Certain classes of signs arouse suspicion. The priest is to inspect. If he sees them to be distinctly leprous, the patient is to be so treated; otherwise he is to be secluded for one or two periods of seven days; if there is no further spreading, he is discharged clean.
