1._And the Lord spake. _This is the object of the exhortation: first, that they should not measure the service of God by their own conceits, but rather by His nature; and secondly, that they should begin by studying (281) to be holy. For nothing is harder than for men to divest themselves of their carnal affections to prepare for imitating God. Besides, they willingly lie slumbering in their own filthiness, and seek to cloak it by the outward appearance of religion. Here, then, they are recalled to the imitation of God, who, in adopting them, desired that they should bear His image, just as good and undegenerate children resemble their father. EXPOSITION From the prohibition of moral uncleanness exhibiting itself in the form of incest and licentiousness, the legislator proceeds to a series of laws and commandments against other kinds of immorality, inculcating piety, righteousness, and kindness. Leviticus 19:1 may be regarded as an extension of the previous chapter in this direction, after which the subject of Leviticus 18:1, is again taken up in Leviticus 20:1. HOLINESS, PIETY, IDOLATRY, PEACE-OFFERINGS. Note the mention of the mother first. On the Sabbath, see pp. 101f., Exodus 20:8 *. VARIOUS LAWS, MAINLY OF A MORAL AND HUMANE CHARACTER This chapter was very naturally regarded by Jewish authorities as an embodiment of the Decalogue. It will be observed that in general the precepts in Leviticus 19:3 correspond to those of the first table of the Decalogue ('Thou shalt love the Lord thy God'), and those in Leviticus 19:9 to the second table ('Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself').
