Verse Leviticus 22:24. _BRUISED, OR CRUSHED, OR BROKEN, OR CUT_] That is, no bullock or lamb that is injured in any of the above ways, shall be offered unto the Lord....

The literal meaning of the passage in italics is, and this shall ye not do in your land. It appears to have been understood by the Jews as a prohibition of the mutilation of animals....

EXPOSITION This chapter, which is a continuation of Leviticus 21:1, (1) commands that the ceremonially defiled priest shall not officiate or partake of the sacrificial offerings; (2) declares who may and who may not partake of the priests' portions of the sacrifices; (3) orders that every sacrificial victim be unblemished. LEVITICUS 22:1 In the previous chapter, the priests have been commanded to avoid occasions of ceremonial defilement, but there are times in which they must be unclean. The Targum of Jonathan is, whose testicles are pressed and bruised, and whose nerves are corrupted and bruised, and so most Jewish writers interpret it: NEITHER SHALL YOU MAKE [ANY OFFERING THEREOF] IN YOUR LAND; any offering of any sort, either burnt offering or peace offering, or any other; or ye shall not do, that is, any such thing as here suggested, not bruise, or crush, or break, or cut the testicles of any creature; so the above writers....

CHAPTER 22 _ 1. Care to be exercised in holy things (Leviticus 22:1)_ 2. Care in the enforcement of the law of offerings (Leviticus 22:17) Uncleanness such as mentioned in the first part of the chapter prohibited the partaking of holy things. Strangers who did not belong to the priestly house and even the married daughter of the priest, not living in the priestly household, were not permitted to eat of the offering of the holy things. CONDITIONS TO BE SATISFIED BY THE VICTIMS in the case of certain sacrifices. This set of rules is given to Aaron and his sons as containing guidance for the priests-' examination of the animals. For vows and freewill offerings (Leviticus 1-3) the victim is to be a male, without blemish. In the case of a peace offering, which is to accomplish a vow or freewill offering (un-mentioned in Leviticus 3), the sex of the animal is not mentioned, but certain blemishes are specified. Malformations are allowed in the case of freewill offerings, but not of vows, which are of the nature of a debt. Castration renders an animal unfit for sacrifice, even if the operation had been performed before it came into Hebrew hands; it is a destruction (RV corruption) of its true nature....

_Directions as to the quality of offerings_ This passage retains clear signs of a remarkably composite character. Leviticus 22:17 _a_indicate (-unto Aaron, and to his sons," -unto all etc.") that what follows is a blending of directions referring to priests and to the people. But further, Leviticus 22:21 presents what is virtually a repetition of the directions in Leviticus 22:18, while the differences in phraseology between the two point to diversity of origin. We notice further that the classes of offerings dealt with differ, viz. Burnt-Offerings and Peace-Offerings respectively, while each of these have the same sub-divisions, i.e. Vows and Freewill-Offerings, the former passage making no refere

NEITHER SHALL YE MAKE ANY OFFERING THEREOF IN YOUR LAND— Though there is nothing for _offering_ in the Hebrew, yet the verb and the context sufficiently shew, that our version has added it with great propriety. The four participles, _bruised, crushed, broken, cut,_ have immediate reference to the words _bullock_ and _lamb;_ to which animals, the two participles in the Hebrew, rendered _superfluous_ and _lacking,_ are applied, and of which the four following must be understood; not of any _parts_ of them, of which no mention is made in the text. Dr. Beaumont's short gloss is, "in your land ye shall not do it, i.e. any in your land of Israel; opposed to _the stranger_ in the next verse: _not do it; i.e._ not _offer_ it, or make it a sacrifice, or suffer it to be done by any in your land....
