_AND THE TWO KIDNEYS, AND THE FAT THAT IS ON THEM, WHICH IS BY THE FLANKS, AND THE CAUL ABOVE THE LIVER, WITH THE KIDNEYS, IT SHALL HE TAKE AWAY._ THE TWO KIDNEYS ... OF THE FLOCK ... THE WHOLE RUMP, ['alyaah] - the tail of the Syrian sheep, ovis laticaudia (Linnoeus) (Leviticus 7:3; Leviticus 8:25; Leviticus 9:19; Exodus 29:22). There is in Eastern countries a species of sheep the tails of which are not less than four feet and a half in length. These tails are of a substance between fat and marrow. Verse Leviticus 3:9. _THE WHOLE RUMP, IT SHALL HE TAKE OFF HARD BY THE_ _BACKBONE_] To what has already been said on the _tails_ of the eastern sheep, in the note on Exodus 29:22, we may add the following observation from Dr. Russel concerning the sheep at Aleppo. "Their _tails_," says he, "are of a substance between _fat_ and _marrow_, and are not eaten separately, but mixed with the lean meat in many of their dishes, and also often used instead of butter." He states also that a common sheep of this kind, without the head, fat, skin, and entrails, weighs from _sixty_ to _seventy_ English pounds, of which the tail usually weighs _fifteen_ pounds and upwards; but that those of the largest breed, when fattened will weigh _one hundred and fifty_...

THE WHOLE RUMP - The whole fat tail: i. e., the tail of the kind of sheep well known in the East, and often weighing 15 lbs. and even as much as 50 lbs., when the sheep has been increased by artificial fattening....

EXPOSITION THE PEACE OFFERING. The peace offering, though the instructions here given respecting it precede those relating to the sin offering (for a reason to be stated hereafter), is the last in order of the sacrifices when they were all presented together. First, the sin offering taught the need of, and symbolically wrought, propitiation and atonement; next the burnt offering represented the absolute surrender of man's will to God's will; then the meat offering, by its gift of homage, declared the loyal submission of the offerer; and then followed the peace offering, symbolizing the festive joy which pervades the souls of those who are in communion with God. the essential characteristic of the peace offering is the feast upon the sacrifice, participated in symbolically by God (by means of the part consumed on the altar, and the part eaten by his ministers) and actually by the offerer...

AND HE SHALL OFFER OF THE SACRIFICE OF THE PEACE OFFERING,.... That is, the priest, Aaron, or one of his two sons: AN OFFERING MADE BY FIRE UNTO THE LORD; that part of it which was to be burnt with fire; and in the peace offering of the lamb there was something more than in the peace offering of the bullock, or of the goat, which follows: THE FAT THEREOF, [AND] THE WHOLE RUMP, IT SHALL HE TAKE OFF HARD BY THE BACKBONE; not the rump or tail, but the fat of it; the copulative "and" is not in the text; wherefore Aben Ezra says, that Gaon was mistaken in reading it as we do, "the fat there of", and "the whole rump"; but it should be rendered, "its fat of the whole rump", or "tail": in the eastern countries k, some sheep and lambs had very large tails, and very fat ones, the least weighing ten or twelve pounds, the largest above forty, and were put in little carts for ease and safety; SEE G...

3. THE PEACE OFFERING CHAPTER 3 _ 1. The ox (Leviticus 3:1)_ 2. The sheep or goat (Leviticus 3:6) This is the third “sweet savour offering,” and is closely linked with the burnt offering, but it differs from it, especially, in that part of it was to be eaten. The peace offering also had the character of a thank offering (Leviticus 7:11). As it was offered on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, it cannot therefore be separated from Christ offering Himself as the burnt offering. SHEEP.Flock (Leviticus 3:6) includes either sheep or goats, but note that by implication only lambs, and not full-grown sheep, are to be offered. The ritual is the same as for cattle, save that the fat tail (another special delicacy, properly the fat lying close to the tail in certain breeds of sheep) is carefully mentioned.
