1-12 Whatever we have, the property of it is God's; we have only the use of it, according to the direction of our great Lord, and for his honour. This steward wasted his lord's goods. Verse Luke 16:6. _A HUNDRED MEASURES OF OIL._] εκατον βατους, _A hundred_ _baths_. The בת _bath_ was the largest measure of capacity among the Hebrews, except the _homer_, of which it was the tenth part: see Luke 45:11; Luke 45:14. It is equal to the _ephah_, i.e. to _seven gallons and a half_ of our measure. _TAKE THY BILL_] _Thy account _- το γραμμα. The _writing_ in which the debt was specified, together with the obligation to pay so much, at such and such times. A HUNDRED MEASURES - The measure here mentioned is the “bath” which contained, according to Dr. Arbuthnot’s tables, 7 12 gallons, or, according to the marginal note, about 9 gallons and 3 quarts. OIL - Oil of olives, or sweet oil. It was much used for lamps, as an article of food Exodus 29:2, and also for anointing, and, of course, as an article of commerce, 1 Kings 5:11. These were persons, doubtless, who had “rented” land of the rich man, and who were to give him a certain proportion of the produce. PARABLE OF THE UNJUST STEWARD (Lk. only). It has been suggested that a better title would be The Shrewd Agent. At any rate the epithet unrighteous has as much reference (if not more) to Luke 16:1 as to Luke 16:5. A steward in danger of dismissal for mismanagement of his master's estate seeks to provide for the future by making friends with the tenants. That this is at his master's expense has nothing to do with the point of the parable-_,_ it is a parable, not an allegory.
