And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. AND WHEN HE SAW THEM, HE SAID UNTO THEM, GO SHOW YOURSELVES UNTO THE PRIESTS - that is, as cleansed persons. See the note at . One of these was a Samaritan; but he too was required to go with the rest, thus teaching him that "Salvation was of the Jews" (). And yet, when ordered to do this, they had not been cleansed. A great trial of faith this was. But they obeyed. AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT, AS THEY WENT, THEY WERE CLEANSED. 14._Show yourselves to the priests _This reply was equivalent to saying, “You are clean;” for we know that the discernment of leprosy belonged _to the priests, _who were enjoined in the law to distinguish between the clean and the unclean, (Leviticus 14:2.) Thus Christ preserves their right entire, and appeals to them as witnesses for approving of the miracle which he had wrought; and we have accordingly said, that pious and devout sentiments concerning Christ must have been entertained by those men who were instantly led, by his bare word, to entertain the hope of a cure. 11-19 A sense of our spiritual leprosy should make us very humble whenever we draw near to Christ. It is enough to refer ourselves to the compassions of Christ, for they fail not. We may look for God to meet us with mercy, when we are found in the way of obedience. Only one of those who were healed returned to give thanks. It becomes us, like him, to be very humble in thanksgivings, as well as in prayers. Christ noticed the one who thus distinguished himself, he was a Samaritan. Verse Luke 17:14. _SHOW YOURSELVES UNTO THE PRIESTS._] According to the direction, Leviticus 13:2, c. Leviticus 14:2, c. Our Lord intended that their cure should be received by _faith_: they depended on his goodness and power and though they had no promise, yet they went at his command to do that which those only were required by the law to do who were _already_ healed. _AND - AS THEY WENT_] In this spirit of implicit faith; _they were_ _cleansed_. God highly honours this kind of faith, and makes it the instrument in his hand of working many miracles. GO SHOW YOURSELVES ... - See the notes at Matthew 8:4. By this command he gave them an implied assurance that they would be healed; for the “design” for which they were to go was to exhibit the “evidence” that they were restored, and to obtain permission from the priest to mingle again in society. It may also be observed that this required no small measure of “faith” on their part, for he did not “first” heal them, and then tell them to go; he told them to go without “expressly” assuring them that they would be healed, and without, “as yet,” any evidence to show to the priest.
