Luke 18:25

For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. FOR IT IS EASIER FOR A CAMEL TO GO THROUGH A NEEDLE'S EYE, THAN FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD - a proverbial expression, denoting literally a thing impossible, but figuratively a thing very difficult....

18-30 Many have a great deal in them very commendable, yet perish for lack of some one thing; so this ruler could not bear Christ's terms, which would part between him and his estate. Many who are loth to leave Christ, yet do leave him. After a long struggle between their convictions and their corruptions, their corruptions carry the day. They are very sorry that they cannot serve both; but if one must be quitted, it shall be their God, not their wordly gain. Their boasted obedience will be found mere outside show; the love of the world in some form or other lies at the root. Men are apt to speak too much of what they have left and lost, of what they have done and suffered for Christ, as Peter did. But we should rather be ashamed that there has been any regret or difficulty in doing it....

Verse 25. _IT AS EASIER FOR A CAMEL_] Instead of καμηλον, _a camel_, S, and _four_ other MSS., read καμιλου, _a cable_. See the same reading noticed on the parallel place, Matthew 19:24....

EXPOSITION LUKE 18:1 _The Lord speaks the two parables on prayer_—_the importunate widow, and the Pharisee and publican._ LUKE 18:1 AND HE SPAKE A PARABLE UNTO THEM TO THIS END, THAT MEN OUGHT ALWAYS TO PRAY, AND NOT TO FAINT. The formnla ἕλεγε δὲ καί, literally, "and he spake also," calls attention to the fact that the parable-teaching immediately to follow was a continuation of what had preceded. Indeed, the connection between the first of the two parables, which urges restless continued prayer, and the picture which the Lord had just drawn of men's state of utter forgetfulness of God, is obvious. FOR IT IS EASIER FOR A CAMEL,.... These words were spoken to the disciples again, and were a second address to them, after they had shown astonishment at the former; Matthew 19:24 and Mark 10:24....

Luke 18:1. _And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;_ Especially, not to faint in prayer, not to become disheartened, or weary, even if their prayers should, for a long time, remain unanswered. Luke 18:2. _Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: and there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary._ He would not have interested himself in her case simply because she was a poor widow, he had no bowels of compassion for her; nor would it have concerned him at all that her adversary had wronged her. He did not trouble to discharge the duties appertaining to his office. No fear of God and no respect for public opinion, affected him at all....

THE GREAT REFUSAL AND THE OBSTACLE OF RICHES (Mark 10:17 *, Matthew 19:16 *). Lk. describes the inquirer as a ruler (probably of the local synagogue), and unlike Mt. keeps Mk.'s words in Luke 18:18 f. Luke 18:27 is a wider saying than the parallels. In 29 Lk. adds wife and gives for the Kingdom of God's sake in place of for the Gospel's sake (Mk.), or for my name's sake (Mt.)....
