AND SHE COMING IN THAT INSTANT, [ epistasa (G2186)] - rather, 'standing by' or 'presenting herself;' for she had been there already. When Simeon's testimony to the blessed Babe was dying away, she was ready to take it up. GAVE THANKS LIKEWISE UNTO THE LORD, [ anthoomologeito (G437)] - rather, 'gave thanks in turn,' or responsively to Simeon, AND SPAKE OF HIM TO ALL THEM THAT LOOKED FOR REDEMPTION IN JERUSALEM. The reading, adopted by recent critics, 'the redemption of Jerusalem,' has not, as we think, sufficient authority. The meaning appears to be, 'She spake of Him to all them in Jerusalem that...

38._Made acknowledgment also to God _(206) The holy melody, which proceeded from the lips of Simeon and Anna, is praised by Luke, in order that believers may exhort each other to sing with one mouth the praises of God, and may give mutual replies. When he says, that Anna _spake of him to all who looked for redemption in Jerusalem, _he again points out the small number of the godly. For the substance of faith lay in this expectation; and it is evident, that there were few who actually cherished it in their minds....

36-40 There was much evil then in the church, yet God left not himself without witness. Anna always dwelt in, or at least attended at, the temple. She was always in a praying spirit; gave herself to prayer, and in all things she served God. Those to whom Christ is made known, have great reason to thank the Lord. Verse 38. _COMING IN THAT INSTANT_] αυτη τη ωρα, _at that very_ _time_-while Simeon held the blessed Redeemer in his arms, and was singing his _departing_ and _triumphal_ song. _GAVE THANKS LIKEWISE_] She, as well as _Simeon_, returned God public thanks, for having sent this Saviour to Israel. _SPAKE OF HIM_] Of the nature and design of his mission; and the glory that should take place in the land. _TO ALL THEM THAT LOOKED FOR REDEMPTION_] As Daniel's seventy weeks were known to be now completed, the more pious Jews were in constant expectation of the promised Messiah. They were expecting redemption, λυτρωσις; such a redemption as was to be brought about by an _atonement_, or _expiatory victim_, or _ransom price_. Luke 1:68. IN JERUSALEM.

EXPOSITION LUKE 2:1 _The Redeemer's birth_. LUKE 2:1 THERE WENT OUT A DECREE FROM CAESAR AUGUSTUS, THAT ALL THE WORLD SHOULD BE TAXED; more accurately, _that there should be a registration_, etc.; that is, with a view to the assessment of a tax. On the historical note of St. Luke in this passage much discussion has arisen, not, however, of much real practical interest to the ordinary devout reader. We will glance very briefly at the main criticism of this and the following verse. Respecting this general registration it is alleged (1) no historian of the time mentions such a decree of Augustus.
