And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: AND HE SAID, OF A TRUTH I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT THIS POOR WIDOW HATH CAST IN MORE THAN THEY ALL - in proportion to her means, which is God's standard of judgment ()....

1-4 From the offering of this poor widow, learn that what we rightly give for the relief of the poor, and the support of God's worship, is given unto God; and our Saviour sees with pleasure whatever we have in our hearts to give for the relief of his members, or for his service. Blessed Lord! the poorest of thy servants have two mites, they have a soul and a body; persuade and enable us to offer both unto thee; how happy shall we be in thine accepting of them!...

EXPOSITION LUKE 21:1 _The_ _widow_'_s mite. _We find this little sketch only here and in St. Mark (Mark 12:41). The Master was sitting—resting, probably, after the effort of the great denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees—in the covered colonnade of that part of the temple which was open to the Jewish women. Here was the treasury, with its thirteen boxes in the wall, for the reception of the alms of the people. These boxes were called _shopheroth, _or trumpets, because they were shaped like trumpets, swelling out beneath, and tapering upward into a narrow mouth, or opening, into which the alms were dropped. Some of these "trumpets" were marked with special inscriptions, denoting the destination of the offerings....

To his disciples, as the Ethiopic version adds; these he called to him, upon this occasion, as appears from Mark 12:43 OF A TRUTH I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT THIS POOR WOMAN HATH CAST IN MORE THAN THEY ALL: than all the rich men; not in quantity, but in proportion to her ability; Mark 12:43....

And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: for all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but like of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down._ This was literally true of the temple at Jerusalem; and today there remains nothing of it. THE WIDOW'S TWO MITES. With some abbreviation Lk. closely follows Mark 12:41 *....

Jesus looked up and saw those who were putting their gifts into the treasury--rich people--and he saw a poor widow putting in two lepta. So he said, "I tell you truly that this poor widow has put in more than all, for all these contributed to the gifts out of their abundance, but she, out of her need, has put in everything she had to live on." In the Court of the Women in the Temple there were thirteen collecting boxes known as the Trumpets. They were shaped like trumpets with the narrow part at the top and the wider part at the foot. Each was assigned to offerings for a different purpose--for the wood that was used to burn the sacrifice, for the incense that was burned on the altar, for the upkeep of the golden vessels, and so on.
