Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. Mark 16:14._Afterwards he appeared to the eleven, while they were sitting. _The participle ( ἀνακειμένοις) which some have rendered _sitting at table, _ought, in my opinion, to be simply rendered _sitting; _and it is not without reason that I take this view of it, if it be agreed that the Evangelist here describes the first appearance; for it would have been an unseasonable hour of supper about midnight. Besides, if the cloth had been laid, (322) this would not have agreed with what Luke shortly afterwards says, that Christ asked if they had anything to eat. AFTERWARD HE APPEARED UNTO THE ELEVEN - Judas was dead, and the apostles were then called “the eleven.” This was done even when one of them was absent, as Thomas was on this occasion.
