Mark 16:19

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. SO THEN, AFTER THE LORD - an epithet applied to Jesus by this Evangelist only in the two concluding verses, when He comes to His glorious Ascension and its subsequent fruits. It is most frequent in Luke. HAD SPOKEN UNTO THEM, HE WAS RECEIVED UP INTO HEAVEN. See the notes at . AND SAT ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD. This great truth is here only related as a fact in the Gospel History. In that exalted attitude He appeared to Stephen (); and it is thereafter perpetually referred to as His proper condition in glory....

Mark 16:19._And after the Lord had thus spoken to them. _The Evangelist Matthew, having extolled in magnificent language the reign of Christ over the whole world, says nothing about his ascension to heaven. Mark, too, takes no notice of the place and the manner, both of which are described by Luke; for he says that _the disciples were led out to Bethany, _that from _the Mount of Olives, _(Matthew 24:3,) whence he had descended to undergo the ignominy of the cross, he might ascend the heavenly throne. Now as he did not, after his resurrection, appear indiscriminately to all, so he did not permit all to be the witnesses of his ascension to heaven; for he intended that this mystery of faith should be known by the preaching of the gospel rather than beheld by the eyes....

19,20 After the Lord had spoken he went up into heaven. Sitting is a posture of rest, he had finished his work; and a posture of rule, he took possession of his kingdom. He sat at the right hand of God, which denotes his sovereign dignity and universal power. Whatever God does concerning us, gives to us, or accepts from us, it is by his Son. Now he is glorified with the glory he had before the world. The apostles went forth, and preached every where, far and near. HE WAS RECEIVED UP INTO HEAVEN - In a cloud from the Mount of Olives. See Acts 1:9. THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD - We are not to suppose that God has hands, or that Jesus sits in any particular direction from God. This phrase is taken from the manner of speaking among men, and means that he was exalted to honor and power in the heavens. It was esteemed the place of the highest honor to be seated at the right hand of a prince. So, to be seated at the right hand of God, means that Jesus is exalted to the highest honor of the universe. A hasty but lavish embalming of our Lord's sacred body had been begun on Friday evening by Joseph and Nicodemus.
