And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: AND IF THY HAND OFFEND THEE, CUT IT OFF: IT IS BETTER FOR THEE TO ENTER INTO LIFE MAIMED, THAN HAVING TWO HANDS TO GO INTO HELL. The only difference between the words there and here is, that there they refer to impure inclinations; here, to an ambitious disposition, an irascible or quarrelsome temper, and the like: and the injunction is, to strike at the root of such dispositions and cut off the occasions of them. 41-50 It is repeatedly said of the wicked, Their worm dieth not, as well as, The fire is never quenched. Doubtless, remorse of conscience and keen self-reflection are this never-dying worm. Surely it is beyond compare better to undergo all possible pain, hardship, and self-denial here, and to be happy for ever hereafter, than to enjoy all kinds of worldly pleasure for a season, and to be miserable for ever. Like the sacrifices, we must be salted with salt; our corrupt affections must be subdued and mortified by the Holy Spirit. Those that have the salt of grace, must show they have a living principle of grace in their hearts, which works out corrupt dispositions in the soul that would offend God, or our own consciences....

Verse Mark 9:43-41. _THY HAND - FOOT - EYE - CAUSE THEE TO OFFEND;_] See the notes on Matthew 5:29. Verse Mark 9:43. _THE FIRE THAT NEVER SHALL BE QUENCHED_] That is, _the_ _inextinguishable fire_. This clause is wanting in L, _three_ others, the _Syriac_, and later _Persic_. Some eminent critics suppose it to be a spurious reading; but the authorities which are _for_ it, are by no means counterbalanced by those which are _against_ it. The same clause in Mark 9:45, is omitted in BCL, _seven_ others, _Syriac_, later _Persic, Coptic_, and one _Itala_. _Eternal fire_
