Mark 9:49._Every man shall be salted with fire. _I have connected these words of Mark with the passage in Matthew which we have just considered: not that I look upon them to have altogether the same meaning, or to have been spoken at the same place and time, but rather to enable the reader to understand better, by means of comparison, the different applications of the same sentence. According to Mark’s narrative, our Lord, having spoken of eternal _fire, _(Mark 9:48,) exhorts his own people, on the contrary, to offer themselves now to God to be seasoned _with fire and salt, _that they may be devoted sacrifices, (379) and that they may not draw upon themselves, by their sins, that _fire _which is never extinguished. Verse Mark 9:49. _FOR EVERY ONE SHALL BE SALTED WITH FIRE_] Every one of those who shall live and die in sin: but there is great difficulty in this verse. The Codex Bezae, and some other MSS., have omitted the first clause; and several MSS. keep the _first_, and omit the last clause - _and every sacrifice shall be salted with_ _salt_. There appears to be an allusion to Isaiah 66:24. It is generally supposed that our Lord means, that as _salt_ preserves the flesh with which it is connected from _corruption_, so this everlasting fire, το πυρ το ασβεστον, this _inconsumable fire_, will have the property, not only of _assimilating_ all things cast into it to its own _nature_, but of making them _inconsumable_ like itself. _Scaliger_ supposes,
