2._And Jesus called a child to him. _The general meaning is, that those who desire to obtain greatness by rising above their brethren, will be so far from gaining their object that they do not even deserve to occupy the lowest corner. He reasons from contraries, because it is humility alone that exalts us. As we are more powerfully affected by appearances presented to the eyes, he holds up to them _a little child _as an emblem of humility. When he enjoins his followers to become _like a child_, this does not extend indiscriminately to all points. We know that in children there are many things faulty; and accordingly Paul bids us be _children_, not in _understanding_, but _in malice_, (1 Corinthians 14:20;) and in another passage he exhorts us to strive to reach the state of _a perfect man_, (Ephesian

Many love to hear and speak of privileges and glory, who are willing to pass by the thoughts of work and trouble. Our Lord set a little child before them, solemnly assuring them, that unless they were converted and made like little children, they could not enter his kingdom. Children, when very young, do not desire authority, do not regard outward distinctions, are free from malice, are teachable, and willingly dependent on their parents. It is true that they soon begin to show other dispositions, and other ideas are taught them at an early age; but these are marks of childhood, and render them proper emblems of the lowly minds of true Christians. Verse Matthew 18:2. _A LITTLE CHILD_] But this child could _walk_, for he called _him to him_. _Nicephorus_ says, this was _Ignatius_, who was afterwards bishop of _Antioch_, and suffered martyrdom under, and by command of, the Roman Emperor _Trojan_, in the 107th year of our Lord. WHO IS THE GREATEST IN THE KINGDOM, OF HEAVEN? - By the kingdom of heaven they meant the kingdom which they supposed he was about to set up - his kingdom as the Messiah. They asked the question because they supposed, in accordance with the common expectation of the Jews, that he was about to set up a temporal kingdom of great splendor, and they wished to know who should have the principal offices, and posts of honor and profit.
