18-26 The death of our relations should drive us to Christ, who is our life. And it is high honour to the greatest rulers to attend on the Lord Jesus; and those who would receive mercy from Christ, must honour him. The variety of methods Christ took in working his miracles, perhaps was because of the different frames and tempers of mind, which those were in who came to him, and which He who searches the heart perfectly knew. A poor woman applied herself to Christ, and received mercy from him by the way. If we do but touch, as it were, the hem of Christ's garment by living faith, our worst evils will be healed; there is no other real cure, nor need we fear his knowing things which are a grief and burden to us, but which we would not tell to any earthly friend. Verse Matthew 9:23. _SAW THE MINSTRELS AND THE PEOPLE MAKING A NOISE_] αυλητας, _pipers_; Anglo-Saxon, [Anglo-Saxon] _the whistlers_; Gothic, _haurngans haurngandans_, the _horn-blowers blowing with_ _their horns_. Nearly the same as the _pipublasara_, pipe-blowers of the _Islandic_: for among all those nations funeral lamentations accompanied with such rude instruments, were made at the death of relatives. That _pipes_ were in use among the _Jews_, in times of calamity or death, is evident from Jeremiah 48:36. And among the _Greeks_, and _Romans_, as well as among the Jews, persons were _hired_ on purpose to follow the funeral processions with _lamentations_. See...

JAIRAS-' DAUGHTER AND THE WOMAN WITH HAEMORRHAGE (Mark 5:21 *, Luke 8:40). Mt. records in nine verses what Mk. takes twenty-three to tell. He again forsakes Mk.'s order, postponing Mark 2:23 to Mark 4:34 till later (chs. 12, 10, 13). Despite his compression Mt. remarks that the woman (? III. THE DEAD MADE WHOLE. 23. AND WHEN JESUS CAME INTO THE RULER'S HOUSE. He healed the woman on the way. As he spoke his last words to her, according to Mark, they reached the house. Jesus had likely been delayed before starting, and, as preparations for burial commence as soon as breath leaves the body, the corpse had likely been washed and laid out, in the customary way for the grave, before he came. SAW THE MINSTRELS. The Jews, like other orientals, were wont to employ professional mourners, minstrels who made plaintive music, or wailed. This purchased grief was intended to make the occasion of death important, to distribute the impression of sorrow over many, and lighten the grief of the friends.
