18-26 The death of our relations should drive us to Christ, who is our life. And it is high honour to the greatest rulers to attend on the Lord Jesus; and those who would receive mercy from Christ, must honour him. The variety of methods Christ took in working his miracles, perhaps was because of the different frames and tempers of mind, which those were in who came to him, and which He who searches the heart perfectly knew. A poor woman applied herself to Christ, and received mercy from him by the way. If we do but touch, as it were, the hem of Christ's garment by living faith, our worst evils will be healed; there is no other real cure, nor need we fear his knowing things which are a grief and burden to us, but which we would not tell to any earthly friend. Verse Matthew 9:24. _THE MAID IS NOT DEAD, BUT SLEEPETH_] That is, she is not dead so as to _continue_ under the power of death; but shall be raised from it as a, person is from natural sleep. _THEY LAUGHED HIM TO SCORN._] κατεγελων αυτον, _they ridiculed_ _him_; from κατα, _intensive_, and γελαω, _I laugh_: - _they_ _grinned a ghastly smile_, expressive of the contempt they felt for his person and knowledge. People of the world generally ridicule those truths which they neither comprehend nor love, and deride those who publish them; but a faithful minister of God, (copying the example of Christ,) keeps on his way, and does the work of his Lord and Master....

JAIRAS-' DAUGHTER AND THE WOMAN WITH HAEMORRHAGE (Mark 5:21 *, Luke 8:40). Mt. records in nine verses what Mk. takes twenty-three to tell. GIVE PLACE, FOR THE MAID IS NOT DEAD, BUT SLEEPETH. The reality of the death is not denied, but only the fact implicitly assumed, that death will be followed by. resurrection, as sleep is by an awakening. He, the Lord of life, takes away that word of fear, "She is dead," and puts in its room that milder word which gives promise of an awakening, "She sleepeth."--_ Trench._ The whole account of this incident is inconsistent with the idea that the maiden was simply raised from slumber or. fainting fit.
