Micah 7:18

Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. WHO IS A GOD LIKE UNTO THEE. Micah herein alludes to the meaning of his own name (see Introduction), "Who is a God like the Lord?" This challenge was first given to pagandom and its false gods in the song of Moses, after God had executed judgment on the gods of Egypt first, and then upon Pharaoh at the Red Sea, (, "Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?") The prophets were God's champions for the truth against the growing apostasy in Israel. So now in Judah, when the same strife was beginning between Yahweh on one side and the idols and Jewish apostates on the other, Micah is sent forth...

The Prophet here exclaims that God ought to be glorified especially for this — that he is merciful to his people. When he says, _Who is God as thou art? _he does not mean that there are other gods; for this, strictly speaking, is an improper comparison. But he shows that the true and only God may be distinguished from all idols by this circumstance — that he graciously forgives the sins of his people and bears with their infirmities. It is indeed certain, that all nations entertained the opinion, that their gods were ready to pardon; hence their sacrifices and hence also their various kinds of expiations. Nor has there been any nation so barbarous as not to own themselves guilty in some measure before God; hence all the Gentiles were wont to apply to the mercy of their gods; while yet they had no firm conviction: for though they laid hold on this first principle, — that the gods would be...

14-20 When God is about to deliver his people, he stirs up their friends to pray for them. Apply spiritually the prophet's prayer to Christ, to take care of his church, as the great Shepherd of the sheep, and to go before them, while they are here in this world as in a wood, in this world but not of it. God promises in answer to this prayer, he will do that for them which shall be repeating the miracles of former ages. Verse Micah 7:18. _WHO_ IS _A GOD LIKE UNTO THEE, C._] Here is a challenge to all idol worshippers, and to all those who take false views of the true God, to show his like. See his characters they are immediately subjoined. 1. _He pardoneth iniquity_. This is the prerogative of God alone; of that Being who alone has power to _save_ or to _destroy_. 2. _He passeth by transgression_. He can heal _backsliding_, and restore them that are fallen. 3. _He retaineth not his anger forever_. Though, justly displeased because of sin, he pours out his judgments upon the wicked; yet when they return to him, he shows "that he retaineth not his anger forever," but is indescribably ready to save them. 4. _He delighteth in mercy_. WHO IS A GOD - (and, as the word means, A Mighty God,) like unto Thee? He saith not, “Who hast made heaven and earth, the sea and all that therein is” Exodus 20:11; nor, “Who telleth the number of the stars; and calleth them all by their names” Psalms 147:4; nor, “Who by His strength setteth fast the mountains and is girded about with power” Psalms 65:6; but who forgivest! EXPOSITION MICAH 7:1 § 5. _Israel's penitential acknowledgment of the general corruption._ MICAH 7:1 WOE IS ME! (Job 10:15). The prophet begins in a sorrowful strain, and there is much that is said in the chapter, yet there is also much of holy confidence in God.
