The distance between the Elim station and the sea is only one mile and a-half; so that it could with propriety be left unnoticed in the principal account; and perhaps there may be some truth in the conjecture of Lepsius, that a large portion of time people moved down from the headquarters at Elim 'to refresh themselves with a good repast of fish, as they had been in the habit of doing out of the Nile.' 1-49 This is a brief review of the travels of the children of Israel through the wilderness. It is a memorable history. In their travels towards Canaan they were continually on the remove. Such is our state in this world; we have here no continuing city, and all our removes in this world are but from one part a desert to another. They were led to and fro, forward and backward, yet were all the while under the direction of the pillar of cloud and fire. God led them about, yet led them the right way. STAT. VI. Verse Numbers 33:10. _ENCAMPED BY THE_ RED SEA.] It is difficult to assign the _place_ of this encampment, as the Israelites were now on their way to _Mount Sinai_, which lay considerably to the east of _Elim_, and consequently farther from the sea than the former station. It might be called _by the Red Sea_, as the Israelites had _it_, as the principal object, still in view. This station however is mentioned nowhere else. By the _Red Sea_ we are not to understand a sea, the waters of which are _red_, or the _sand_ red, or any thing else _about_ or _in_ it _red_; for nothing of this kind appears. It is called in Hebrew ים סוף _yam suph_, which signifies the _weedy sea_. The _Septuagint_ rendered the original by θαλασσα εραθρα, and the _Vulgate_ after it by mare rubrum

This list was written out by Moses at God’s command Numbers 33:2, doubtless as a memorial of God’s providential care for His people throughout this long and trying period. Numbers 33:3. It is, however, quite rightly translated "journeys," for it is the act of setting out and marching from such a place to such another which the word properly denotes (cf. This station is omitted in Exodus, as well as those mentioned, Numbers 33:13 nothing very remarkable, it is supposed, having happened at those places. NUMBERS 33:18. _PITCHED IN RITHMAH,_ &C.— This and the following stages are not mentioned in Exodus. Rithmah, from chap. Numbers 12:16 appears to have been in the wilderness of Paran, not far from Kadesh-barnea; and the other places seem to have been also in the same wilderness.
