'It is more in accordance with the usage of the sacred writer throughout this chapter to repeat the full name Ije-abarim in Numbers 33:45 as in Numbers 33:44. This is the reading of four MSS. and the Vulgate' ('Negeb,' p. 156). 1-49 This is a brief review of the travels of the children of Israel through the wilderness. It is a memorable history. In their travels towards Canaan they were continually on the remove. Such is our state in this world; we have here no continuing city, and all our removes in this world are but from one part a desert to another. They were led to and fro, forward and backward, yet were all the while under the direction of the pillar of cloud and fire. God led them about, yet led them the right way. STAT. XXXVIII. Verse 45. DIBON-GAD.] Supposed to be the same as _Dibon_, Numbers 32:34, and to be situated on the brook _Arnon_....

This list was written out by Moses at God’s command Numbers 33:2, doubtless as a memorial of God’s providential care for His people throughout this long and trying period. Numbers 33:3. For these places, see the marginal reference. Numbers 33:8 PI-HAHIROTH - Hebrew “Hahiroth,” but perhaps only by an error of transcription. However, the omitted “pi” is only a common Egyptian prefix. EXPOSITION ITINERARY OF THE WANDERINGS (Numbers 33:1). NUMBERS 33:1 THESE ARE THE JOURNEYS. The Hebrew word מַסְעֵי is rendered σταθμοί_ _by the Septuagint, which means "stages" or "stations." It is, however, quite rightly translated "journeys," for it is the act of setting out and marching from such a place to such another which the word properly denotes (cf. DIBON-GAD. Dibon of the tribe of Gad. Compare Numbers 21:30. So called because it was appropriated by Gad (Numbers 32:34); and to distinguish it from another Dibon given to Reuben (Joshua 13:15; Joshua 13:17)....

THEY DEPARTED FROM IIM, AND PITCHED IN DIBON-GAD— It is said, chap. Numbers 21:12 that _they removed from thence, and pitched in the valley of Zared,_ near which, probably, Dibon-gad was situated. Most interpreters take _Dibon-gad_ to be the same place which is called _Dibon,_ and which fell to the portion of the Gadites, chap. Numbers 32:34 and is therefore called Dibon-gad, to distinguish it from another Dibon, which fell to the Reubenites, Joshua 13:17. But the context shews, that this Dibon was on the south side of Arnon, in the wilderness of Moab; whereas Dibon, both of the Gadites and Reubenites, was on the north side of that river.
