The Prophet here sets forth the reason why God would deal so severely and dreadfully with the Idumeans. Had he simply prophesied of their destruction, it would have been an important matter; for the Jews might have thereby known that their ruin was not chance, but the scourge of God; they might have known that they themselves were with others chastised by God, and this would have been a useful instruction to them: but what brought them the chief consolation was to hear, that they were so dear to God that he would undertake the defense of their wrongs and avenge them, that he would have a regard for their safety. Verse Obadiah 1:10. _FOR_ THY _VIOLENCE AGAINST THY BROTHER JACOB_] By this term the _Israelites_ in general are understood; for the _two_ brothers, - _Jacob_, from whom sprang the _Jews_, and _Esau_, from whom sprang the _Idumeans_ or _Edomites_, - are here put for the _whole people_ or descendants of both. _Thy brother Jacob_ This was the great aggravation of the violence. "Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother," was the command of God to the Jews (Deuteronomy 23:7). Treachery from friends and allies was the meet punishment of such a sin. _thou shalt be cut off for ever_ As the sin of Edom is concisely expressed in this verse by the one word violence, the details of that violence being afterwards given, so the punishment of Edom is here proclaimed in its ultimate completeness, the steps of his total extinction being in like manner afterwards described....

_THE LORD CONDEMNS EDOM'S CRUELTY -- OBADIAH 1:10-14:_ God condemned Edom for violence done to Jacob. There was a physical relationship there and yet there was a great deal of hostility, especially from Edom toward Jacob. This is one of the reasons that motivated God to cut off Edom. Edom did nothing to help when "strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem." Edom took pleasure in the misfortunes of Jacob. When the inhabitants of Judah were carried into Babylon Edom celebrated the disaster. (2 Kings 25) God asked Edom, "Why did you celebrate when such a dreadful disaster struck your relatives?
