Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. The "vanity" here answers to "a slack (deceitful) hand," Proverbs 10:4, where cf. note. "He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand." All fortunes acquired by speculation, lucky hits, and ministering to the pride or luxury of others, c., soon become dissipated. They are not gotten in the way of Providence, and have not God's blessing, and therefore are not permanent....

BY VANITY - literally, “by a breath,” i. e., by a windfall, or sudden stroke of fortune, not by honest labor. The general meaning seems to be that the mere possession of riches is as nothing; they come and go, but the power to gain by skill of hand (“labor”) is everything....

The Hebrew is elliptical, "A wise son, his father's discipline," _i.e._ is the object or the result of his father's education; he owes his wisdom to it. CHAPTER 13 THE CONTRAST: ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE The contrast in Proverbs concerning the righteous and the wicked is continued in this chapter, showing mostly the advantage of the righteous, illustrating a statement found in the prophet Isaiah: “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings” Isaiah 3:10). Then the contrast: “Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him” Proverbs 13:11). PROVERBS 13. This chapter has little that is fresh and no new groups of proverbs. We have a well-known reference to the weariness of waiting for a hope that comes not (Proverbs 13:12 and Proverbs 13:19 a). There is a new proverb relating to the faithfulness of messengers, perhaps with reference to diplomatic missions. PROVERBS 13:5. IS LOATHSOME: render behaves vilely. Proverbs 13:7. Both AV and RV obscure the point of the aphorism, which contrasts two equally obnoxious social shams. Translate, There are poor people who pretend to be rich, and there are rich people who feign they are poor....

BY LABOUR. by the hand: "hand"being put by Figure of speech _Metonymy_ (of Cause), App-6, for the labour effected by it....

_by vanity_ i.e. by untrustworthy methods, such as speculation, gambling, high rate of interest with poor security (comp. Proverbs 21:6), in contrast to hard work, _by labour_(lit. _with the hand_). The word vanity in this sense of what is unreliable and transitory is a key-word of the Book of Ecclesiastes. The LXX. and Vulg. render _in haste_, quick returns, ἐπισπουδαζομένη (with the addition μετὰ ἀνομίας), _festinata_....
