A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. A GOOD (MAN) LEAVETH AN INHERITANCE TO HIS CHILDREN'S CHILDREN - i:e., presuming that the children and grand-children taught by the good man follow his steps. Verse Proverbs 13:22. _A GOOD_ MAN _LEAVETH AN INHERITANCE_] He files many a _prayer_ in heaven in their behalf, and his good _example_ and _advices_ are remembered and quoted from generation to generation. Besides, whatever property he left was _honestly_ acquired, and _well-gotten goods are permanent_. The general experience of men shows this to be a common case; and that _property ill-gotten_ _seldom reaches to the third generation_. This even the _heathens_ observed. He not only has a sufficiency for the present support of himself and family; but is so prospered and succeeded, as to leave an inheritance after him; and which is continued to and enjoyed, not only by his immediate offspring, but theirs also; for being got honestly, it wears well; see Proverbs 13:11; AND THE WEALTH OF THE SINNER [IS] LAID UP FOR THE JUST; the riches which wicked men get are laid up in the purposes of God for good men; and in his providence they are translated from the one to the other: so the riches of the Egyptians were designed for the Israelites, and by the providence of God were put into their hands; see Job 27:16....

CHAPTER 13 THE CONTRAST: ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE The contrast in Proverbs concerning the righteous and the wicked is continued in this chapter, showing mostly the advantage of the righteous, illustrating a statement found in the prophet Isaiah: “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings” Isaiah 3:10). Then the contrast: “Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him” Proverbs 13:11). We have a well-known reference to the weariness of waiting for a hope that comes not (Proverbs 13:12 and Proverbs 13:19 a).
