The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. THE LORD HATH MADE ALL (THINGS) FOR HIMSELF; YEA, EVEN THE WICKED FOR THE DAY OF EVIL. So the Vulgate and Chaldaic similarly, 'All the works of God are for this purpose, that they may obey Him.' His own glory is the end of all God's doings in Providence and in grace. His goodness, wisdom, power, and justice are manifested alike in all His other works, as also even in His reserving the wicked for the day of final destruction. [ lama`aneehuw (H4617) is an unusual form to express "for himself:" for there is the vowel pathach in the first syllable, instead of the usual shªwa; and the affix would ordinarily be lemahanow. Verse Proverbs 16:4. _THE LORD HATH MADE ALL_ THINGS _FOR HIMSELF_] He has so framed and executed every part of his creation, that it manifests his wisdom, power, goodness, and truth. _EVEN THE WICKED FOR THE DAY OF EVIL._] וגם רשע ליום רעה _vegam_ _rasha leyom raah_. The whole verse is translated by the _Chaldee_ thus: "All the works of the LORD are for those who obey him; and the wicked is reserved for the evil day." As רעה _raah_ literally signifies to _feed_, it has been conjectured that the clause might be read, _yea, even the wicked he_ _feeds by the day_, or _daily_. EXPOSITION PROVERBS 16:1 These are specially religions maxims, and they all contain the name Jehovah. PROVERBS 16:1 The Authorized Version makes one sentence of this verse without any contrast or antithesis. This is plainly wrong, there being intended a contrast between the thought of the heart and the well ordered speech. It is better translated, _The plans of the heart are man_'_s_:_ but the answer of the tongue is from Jehovah. _Men make plans, arrange speeches, muster arguments, in the mind; but to put these into proper, persuasive words is a gift of God. CHAPTER 16 IN THE LIGHT OF THE LORD The name Jehovah (LORD) appears eleven times in this chapter of Proverbs. The Lord has the final word, for to man belong the preparations (or plans) of the heart; but from the LORD is the answer of the tongue. It is the same thought as in our English proverb--“Man proposes--God disposes.” Man loves to justify himself, his ways are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits; He is the judge of ways and motives. Our works are to be committed (literal: rolled upon) unto the LORD, then establishment and blessing will follow. PROVERBS 16. The special feature is a group of aphorisms (Proverbs 16:10) relating to kings. The sentiments seem rather to reflect the picture of the ideal king than to indicate any particular period. The metaphors employed and the character depicted suggest a parallel with the ideal king of Psalms 72. PROVERBS 16:4. _for himself for his own purpose_, R.V. marg.; or, _for its own end_, R.V. text. The two meanings really run into one another, for he who makes a thing to serve _its own_purpose makes it to serve _his own_purpose in so making it. The second clause of the verse extends the application of this truth from the physical to the moral sphere of action. But it creates no real difficulty. It is not said that God makes a man wicked, for He "made man upright" (Ecclesiastes 7:29. Comp. Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 1:31), but that being wicked by his own choice he comes under the irrevocable law which dooms him to "the day of evil," of calamity and punishment.
