Verse Proverbs 16:6. _BY MERCY AND TRUTH INIQUITY IS PURGED_] This may be misunderstood, as if a man, by _showing mercy_ and _acting according_ _to truth_, could atone for his own iniquity. The Hebrew text is not ambiguous: בחסד ואמת יכפר עון _bechesed veemeth yechapper avon_; "By mercy and truth he shall atone for iniquity." _He_ - God, _by_ his _mercy_, in sending his son Jesus into the world, - "shall make an atonement for iniquity" according to his _truth_ - the word which he declared by his holy prophets since the world began. Or, if we retain the present version, and follow the _points_ in _yecuppar_, reading "iniquity is purged" or "atoned for," the sense is unexceptionable, as we refer the _mercy_ and the _truth_ to GOD. PROVERBS 16:1 The Authorized Version makes one sentence of this verse without any contrast or antithesis. CHAPTER 16 IN THE LIGHT OF THE LORD The name Jehovah (LORD) appears eleven times in this chapter of Proverbs. The Lord has the final word, for to man belong the preparations (or plans) of the heart; but from the LORD is the answer of the tongue. It is the same thought as in our English proverb--“Man proposes--God disposes.” Man loves to justify himself, his ways are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits; He is the judge of ways and motives. Our works are to be committed (literal: rolled upon) unto the LORD, then establishment and blessing will follow. PROVERBS 16. The special feature is a group of aphorisms (Proverbs 16:10) relating to kings. The sentiments seem rather to reflect the picture of the ideal king than to indicate any particular period. _By mercy and truth iniquity is purged_ This is not a statement of the method and ground of atonement, though the Heb. word here rendered _purged_is the usual word in the O.T. for _covering_, or _atoning for_, sin. That is taught elsewhere both in the Old (Psalms 51:7), and in the New Testament (Romans 3:20-26). But it is a lifting of man's appropriation of atonement out of the ceremonial and ritual into the moral sphere of action.
